Historia
What was Takako Konishi really doing in North Dakota, and why did she end up dead? Did she get lost and freeze to death, as the police concluded, while searching for the fictional treasure buried in a snowbank at the end of the Coen Brothers’ film Fargo? Or was it something else that brought her there? Unrequited love, ritual suicide, a meteor shower, a far-flung search for purpose? The seed of an obsession took root in struggling film student Jana Larson when she chanced upon a news bulletin about the case.

Fascinating
Revisado: 04-23-21
Initially, the sub-title caught my eye. The book goes on to justify my curiosity on that matter.
The author uses a number of novel techniques. To note a couple, the cinematic essay, and storytelling in the second person. I would imagine this to be quite challenging as a writer, and they add unexpected layers of atmosphere to the story.
Although sparse throughout the book, I found the author to be particularly talented with character dialog. I found some of that dialog kicking around in my head for days afterward.
The narrator does a great job on this, handling character accents and Japanese with apparent ease.

Great Read for the Curious Layman
Revisado: 10-11-20
First, the General, stays non-partisan. This nuance allowed me to let my guard down and just listen and learn. I appreciated his rigor.
Second, you don’t need to be a hardcore policy wonk to enjoy this book. It’s well written, and well read by the General himself.

Revisado: 03-07-18
The narration and production were excellent. They very much complimented the feel of the story. And, of course, Corey’s writing is deserving of long strings of superlatives.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Not Enough Swear Words!
Revisado: 08-24-17
I'd give this book six stars... but I was offended by the lack of profanity.
However, I was not offended by the narrator's impersonation of Mitch McConnell. That, and some other impersonations, made this audio book way better than a boring paper version.
Seriously, this was a great book. I mean, like, the upper end of great. The author brings his signature analytical style, good story telling, and then spices it all up with a lot of humor.
I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter's face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time.

Unexpectedly Great
Revisado: 07-04-17
Yeah, yeah, I know. Dick is one of the best and I shouldn't be surprised that this book is great. A couple reasons for my surprise: 1) Somehow, I'd never heard of Ubik. 2) I love sci-fi, but I find most classic sci-fi to be...well, boring.
Anyway, great book. Also, I thought for sure that it was read by a cast of people. Nope. Just one really talented narrator.

I learned a lot from this book. I mean, it really filled in a lot of knowledge gaps for me. Knowledge chasms, actually.
The title might imply a dramatic story, but it's mostly an informational read.

Revisado: 05-29-15
Roy Dotrice delivers an such a great performance to an already fantastic story. I'm not much for fantasy novels, but this book proves it's not the genre that makes for good writing.
Clever dialog is rare. This book has it in abundance.

A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Historia
Absurdly logical, mercilessly real, gathering it's own tumultuous momentum for the ultimate brush with commodity training, JR captures the listener in the cacophony of voices that revolves around this young captive of his own myths. The disturbing clarity with which this finished writer captures the ways in which we deal, dissemble, and stumble through our words - through our lives - while the real plans are being made elsewhere makes JR the extraordinary novel that it is.

Stunning performance, great story
Revisado: 08-03-14
This audio version is more like a screen play or a small, local theater production-- done very well. You know, you go to a play at a dumpy local theater expecting not much and the show blows you away. That's what this audiobook is like. It doesn't come at you all fancy but soon you'll be in its grip. To be honest, it is a little slow at first. Give it some time. You'll be richly rewarded.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Not a boring classic
Revisado: 05-07-14
What a fantastic story. Totally blows away Gatsby, which actually is a boring classic. Top-notch narration, too. You cannot go wrong with this audiobook.
Take note of the great dialog: The backward, southern-simple speaking is nonetheless ornate with wisdom and clarity of thought.
