Historia
With little to live on but her romantic daydreams - which frequently starred the dashing Marquess of Fleetwater - Jean Lindsay lived a rather dismal life with her nasty, drunken uncle. Jean was always the object of ridicule, that is, until news of her unexpected inheritance spread. Suddenly her worn dresses became "quaint" and her forthright manner turned magically to "charming", but to Jean's horror, someone wanted her dead!

Hilarious!
Revisado: 03-05-22
This is one of the funniest Regency romances I've ever encountered. At one point I laughed so hard, I literally did a spit take. MC Beaton did a lot of things well: mystery plots, romance plots, Regency descriptions. But when she was funny—that's my favorite Marion Chesney.

Sad there's only 4 in this series. This was so fun to follow. I could see this being a great miniseries on Masterpiece! (Slash BBC, of course).

Historia
Lochdubh constable Hamish Macbeth's life is going to pot. He has - horrors! - been promoted, his new boss is a dunce, and a self-proclaimed traveler named Sean and his girlfriend have parked their rusty eyesore of a van in the middle of the village. Hamish smells trouble, and he's right, as usual. The doctor's drugs go missing. Money vanishes. Neighbors suddenly become unneighborly. The tension only explodes after the itinerant Sean is found brutally beaten to death in his camper.

TWs yikes! 1993...was a while ago
Revisado: 01-27-22
Good gravy. There's sexual assault, transphobia alcohol abuse and it's all dealt with in a way that makes me realize who things have changed in the past almost-30 years since the book was written. A 2020's audience should take that with a grain of salt, especially, I think, with the setting being rural remote, so it was even more old fashioned thinking being portrayed. All that aside, this is another good Hanish MacBeth story and the conclusion will put a smile on your face.

Perfect
Revisado: 01-26-22
I have no idea what this book is about and that's exactly the point. I fall asleep about 15 minutes in. It works like such a charm. As charming as its reader was to Dita Von Teese that time she was a guest on Top Chef. (Anyone else remember that? The chemistry was intense, you felt it through the TV!)

Admittedly, there's a touch of black humor in the case. Rich, old practical joker Andrew Trent summons his kin to the remote Arrat House in the dead of winter for a deathbed farewell. They arrive to find him in perfect health and eager to torment them with a new bag of unfunny jokes.

More of the same—and that's a good thing
Revisado: 01-26-22
Another adventure for Hanish MacBeth. How Beaton came up with so many colorful characters in her work is really remarkable. This group of murderees, murderer, and suspects were particularly effed up. So fun! I'm ready for that Priscilla & Hanish relationship to develop already though. Jeez.

Historia
Driving home from a dinner party in the village of Sumpton Harcourt, Rory and Molly Harris, the new vicar and his wife, strain to see the road ahead - and then suddenly brake, screeching to a halt. Right in front of them, aglow in the headlights, a body hangs from a gnarled tree at the edge of town. An elderly spinster has been murdered - and the villagers are bewildered as to who would commit such a crime. Agatha Raisin rises to the occasion (a little glad for the excitement, to tell the truth, after a long run of lost cats and divorces on the books).

Stagnant Romance & Slander
Revisado: 01-17-22
How in the name of arse can someone get away with writing about witches and portraying them as devil worshippers in the year 2017? It's really stupid, ignorant & annoying and incredibly insulting. Like, seriously. What the heck? Witches don't even believe in the devil; that's a Christian construct. Blerg.
Also why is the Agatha/Charles romance dragged out for like 10 books. Same thing over & over. Can we develop the story already.
And also, how is that stupid global warming line still getting the books in 2017? No one even calls it that anymore; it's climate change and yeah it's here. That line is so groan inducing.
Anyway, the mystery storyline was good. Performance of Alison Larkin was good. (Penelope Keith is my fave though. She does better voices, I think.)
But truly. The kinda funny edgy lines from the 1990s are just totally silly two decades into the 21st century. And the witch ignorance and stereotyping is so insulting.

Historia
Gloria French was a jolly widow with dyed blonde hair, a raucous laugh, and rosy cheeks. When she first moved from London to the charming Cotswold hills, she was heartily welcomed. She seemed a do-gooder par-excellence, raising funds for the church and caring for the elderly. But she had a nasty habit of borrowing things and not giving them back. They're just small things - a teapot here, a set of silverware there - so it's quite the shock when she is found dead, murdered with a poisoned bottle of elderberry wine.

Really Dumb Villain
Revisado: 01-13-22
What a difference a decade makes. Imagine having a witch be the villain in a contemporary novel now? You'd be laughed at for the stupid ignoramus you are. The villain is a psychopath who happens to dabble in herbal medicine. There's psychopaths in every spiritual practice, and it's not the spiritual practice that breeds the psychopathy. (For example: every other religion ever.) Disappointed in this dumb stereotyping. Otherwise it's a good ol' fun Agatha Raisin mystery. Penelope Keith is so good at voices and accents. Very enjoyable.

The Usual Fun with a Major Story Continuity Error
Revisado: 01-12-22
This is as fun as any other Agatha Raisin story, but there's a big story continuity error. Minor subplot spoiler here, but in the introduction of the character Simon in the previous novel, he had lost both of his parents--his grief for them and Toni's grief for Sharon is how they connected. And in this novel, they're suddenly alive again, helping him out of the Army, and are very wealthy. So bizarre!
