Not even slightly realistic
Revisado: 04-10-25
It's hard to decide where to begin. Book one already established you will roll your eyes a lot. From a 22 year old who was the captain of an ire hauling ship to her best friend that also a a child flew and worked on her father's ship. Now in book 2, they are brought in to tell a multi billion dollar company with hundreds of years of ship building experience, how to design and build ships, even though neither of them has ever done either of those things. You know, because they are smarter than everyone in the room, regardless of what they are talking about. It started getting so dumb, I just quit listening with 4 hours left I feel like it's supposed to be a story about "girl power", but written by a dude that has an image in his head about what "girl power" would be, but is way wrong. just a terrible series.

Dumb and annoying
Revisado: 03-05-25
The problem with this book, and maybe the whole series, is Craig Alanson's success with Expeditionary Force. The banter between Joe Bishop and Skippy made the book a huge success, even though it eventually got tiresome. This book is 16 hours long, and approximately 12 hours of it it's banter Between Kaz, the dog, and the cat. Seriously annoying and not cute or funny,or whatever his goal was. The plot was maybe 3 or 4 hours very sporadically. I am extremely disappointed in how much I dislike this book. I already bought books 3 and 4, which I now regret, but I'll see if they are any better.

Scott Brick is annoying, book is better.
Revisado: 05-08-24
so this is the 3rd book in chronological order of the "Dune" series. So far, it's pretty good. it's no " Foundation " or "I, Robot", but it's good in it's own way. It's also hard to judge the entire " Dune" series based on 3 books not written by the original author.Having said all that, the first 3 books are nothing but drama. I mean like soap opera drama. Almost every single character absolutely hates some other character, and that's all they talk about the whole time. Revenge this and payback that. I mean all 3 books so far. Not to mention how predictable most of those outcomes are And Scott Brick.... how can I fairly describe his narration? He reads very well. Speaks clearly and annunciates everything. Yet he still gets on my nerves sooo bad. He seems to over-annunciate if that's possible And he adds way more to the drama factor is almost every sentence. And his cadence is almost always the same in every sentence. He starts out loud and faster, and then slows and gets to a whisper. Pretty much every single time. And it is absolutely annoying how he pronounces several words. He says melange like, may-lanngge. Almost like it's a French word or something. Next, Director Venport is Dee-rec-tore Venport. Super annoying. And sietch, where they hole up in the sand dunes, he pronounces si-etch, where on the movies it is pronounced like seech. Not sure which one is right, but I assume the movie version, plus Scott Brick seems to mispronounce things on purpose or something. The books are okay so far, but I'll reserve judgement on the writing until after I get into the original books. The narration is good, but annoying.

Swiss Family Robinson meets Gilligan's island
Revisado: 03-13-24
I don't know what I was expecting, or what you might expect from this story, but it was not what I would call the usual post apocalypse or survival story.
To start with, according to the book, one out of a million people survive this outbreak of some sort. So only a couple people per large city or so. Including dogs, but strangely didn't affect any cattle, chickens, goats or any other animals. Wow, such luck.
And wouldn't you know it, of the very few people, around 20, one of them happens to be a commercial airline pilot, a surgeon, a pediatric nurse, a veterinarian, chef, 17 year old thug who turns out to magically be a mechanic, and a 13 year old super genius that among other things, teaches herself, in a day, to accurately predicate all weather. Yet no sleezy lawyers, or just plain 'ol worthless lazy people at all. what are the mathematical odds of those people surviving. Not to mentiona husband and wife, and all their kids and the husbands brother and their kids, because of course it's a generic immunity, yet no other survivors had any genetic relatives survive. Again, what are the odds of that?
For the actual story, no real hardships, at all. Everything works out in every single situation with no problems. No squabbles, arguments, power moves or group take over. Nothing. 2 kind of bad guys in the entire story, who just left the group and never caused any problems at all. Gourmet meals at all times with freshly baked bread. I mean, it was by far the easiest end of the world survival story ever!
They also kept pushing this group/tribe mentality for the whole story. So much so, that in the end, when the super genius 13 year old group leader picks her final house to live in, with her 14 year old boyfriend, that everyone seems totally okay with by the way, 2 other characters in the story tell her that they are moving in with her whether she likes it or not. No, not because she's 13 and sleeping with a 14 year old, but because no one should live separate from everyone else because now we are a group and tribe. She totally acquices since everyone is so nonconfrontational, even though her and her boyfriend spent an entire chapter talking about how they couldn't wait to be alone together again. They also make rules in the end that everyone, as a group, must eat together every single day. I don't know, just seemed like a weird cult or socialist twist.
Absolutely boring and unrealistic.

More drama than usual
Revisado: 01-04-24
For some reason, this book annoyed me a lot more than any of the previous. Meta has became an overbearing drama queen baby, while Capt Maddox repeats "but I'm the Difar" at least once every 3 paragraphs it seems like. it went from him thinking that he might be Difar, and that might help him in certain situations, to I am Difar so no matter the situation I'll win or get out of it. Super alien AI's are no match for him regardless of the situation. On top of Mera speaking like she's from the 1800’s, with husband this, husband that, you can't leave me husband, even though I know that's who you are husband, you still shouldn't leave me to save the universe, I'm much more important! it's all becoming a bit tiresome. if nothing changes in the next book, I won't be wasting any more credits after that.

The Aftermath of a stunning victory—especially an unexpected, complete, and final victory—should be high-fives all around, listening to politicians give boring congratulatory speeches, and a well-deserved rest for the Merry Band of Pirates. Yes, the galaxy is still a freakin' mess, but that is nothing new, and for a change, that can be someone else's problem. Until, you know, something really bad happens, and only the Pirates can deal with the problem... Or not.

only the last 25 minutes worth listening to
Revisado: 12-18-23
so like all the other hardcore fans, I was really looking forward to the new book and what trouble the Merry Band of Pirates would get into. unfortunately not much at all. I'm not sure if all the other books set the bar too high, or if this book really was that boring, but it was slow as hell! The same old jokes started to get annoying, new jokes fell flat, and they same old "it's impossible Joe" from the smartest entity in the galaxy, then Joe says "All we have to do is this", then ta-da, problem solved! maybe I'm just getting tired of the same old material book after book with absolutely nothing new. the only part that really advanced the Joe and Skippy universe was, of course, the very end of the book. all the rest of the book was fluff and filler. I realize all fans will read it andost I I'll say how great is. Honestly, I'm disappointed as a fan.

one of the best books I've listened to, ever.
Revisado: 10-22-23
So I love the Forgotten Ruin series. along with Ruins of the Galaxy and several more ongoing series. however, this particular book has so far been a cut above the rest. I've never been a military man, yet I feel like somehow they really nail the military life, mindset and mantra. Yet this book is much, much more than that. we all love R. C. Bray, yet I can't help but feel that Christopher Ryan Grant is the reason this book is soooo good. His slow deliberate pace gives this series a little something more. it's hard for me to be more specific about why this book is so special. even if I could, I still feel I wouldn't do it justice. several times this book made me tear up, and almost flat out cry in a couple places. please, don't take my word for it. listen for yourself!

Annoying all around
Revisado: 09-07-23
Okay, so this story was annoying for several reasons.
first, the "zombies" turn practically immediately when bitten, which in the grand scheme of things , doesn't really matter. However, their teeth suddenly become sharp and pointy, their mouths suddenly turn into suckers, they get bigger, stronger, faster, and their joints suddenly become.... disjointed. Whatever that means. So basically not even pretending to try to use any kind of science or biology to make them seem plausible.
More annoying than all of that was Bronson Pinchot. His cadence and voice inflection was so repetitive. It made all of them sound whiney. Every man talked with loud bass in their voice, but every woman whispered. Not sure if he can't do a female voice while talking normal, or he envisions every woman being so docile that they have to whisper when they talk. Not to mention, the main character has a dog that apparently has a 130 IQ, understand English even though he was trained in Dutch, has a tactical mind like Patton, and can kill zombies without ever breaking the skin, because as everyone knows, zombie blood turns you into a zombie.
On top of that, any time an action sequence starts, hestartstalkingsofastthatallthewordsruntogetheruntil...he slows it down for something scary. Every single action sequence.
Then when he does slow it down, anything starting with an S, he drags the word out with a Sss at the beginning, like, "he was sssspitting and sssspurtting blood, and then sssspasamed on the ssssoaking wet floor.
Last but not least, the word flesh was said 300 times minimum. I get that is probably the authors fault, but again, the way Bronson would say it was like nails on a chalkboard. He would make flesh into two syllables. Fa-lessssshhhh.
So besides the zombies whose anatomy somehow changes within seconds, and whose people teeth somehow transforms into sharpened, longer teeth with round sucker lips, and the annoying narrator, it's possibly worth it just for 1 credit, but by the end you will be rolling your eyes.

Can't miss!!
Revisado: 11-21-22
After listening to Strange Company, book 1 of this series, I couldn't wait for this follow up book. it took quite a while for the follow up, so I had to listen to book 1 again to refresh my memory.
First and foremost, this book isn't like many sci-fi military books I've listened to so far. The way it is written is what is different. There isn't any gung-ho to it. It's actually very funny in many ways. Dry humor type of funny. The story isn't meant to be funny, but so many of the descriptive words he uses are simple and concise , and straight to the point. The main character is the anti-hero type who downplays any and all actions, and honestly, doesn't do many heroic things. It's the fact that he's the keeper of the logs, the history of their company, that makes it so good. He knows the stories of most of his men, and that's what makes it so interesting. some stories are good, some are bad, but all are interesting. This is now my favorite Military Sci-fi purely because the story was written and narrated so we'll, it's hard not to want more.

Getting dumber each book
Revisado: 09-21-21
I loved the first trilogy with sheriff Duke on the generation ship. Very original. After that it started going downhill. Jonathon Davis' reading is really getting on my nerves. It's withe constant whispering or loud yelling. And his yelling voices actually make me laugh. As bad as that is, now the story itself is getting silly. Aliens living inside humans that control them can be killed, but it always kills the host..... Unless the host is one of the main characters of the story. Sheriff Duke is unkillable. The bad guy aliens never ever miss because they are superhuman, unless they are shooting at sheriff or his close friends. Then it's always grazing wounds. Duke's wife apparently has a PhD in everything because not only is she a structural engineer, she is apparently a software engineer, biology engineer, prosthetic engineer, etc etc. And is a political major. I mean it just keeps piling on how ridiculous the story is getting. It went from original and fun, to predictable melodramatic garbage.
