Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Excellent!!!
Revisado: 09-21-24
The author Percival Everett, and the narrator, Dominic Hoffman, not only portrayed more fully who James really was and what he sacrificed to try to reunite with his wife and daughter caused me to reflect upon the injustices and cruelty done to others they consider “less than” or “not worthy of” for the sake of power and money, or any other reasons. It also caused me to consider once again where my ancestors had lived and the times they lived there and the places they moved to during times of war before and after and how that caused them to feel differently about certain groups of people and how those feelings impacted the views of their own descendants, for better or for worse.

Historia
Ever since she became a parent, Mary Louise Kelly has said “next year.” Next year will be the year she makes it to her son James’s soccer games (which are on weekdays at 4 p.m., right when she is on the air on NPR’s All Things Considered, talking to millions of listeners). Drive carpool for her son Alexander? Not if she wants to do that story about Ukraine and interview the secretary of state. Like millions of parents who wrestle with raising children while pursuing a career, she has never been cavalier about these decisions.

This. Book. Made. Me. Reflect. Consider. Choices.
Revisado: 01-16-24
Listening to the author share her thoughts and experiences as a woman, a daughter, a wife, a mother, and of finding, developing and recognizing her own skills in every sphere of her life made me consider my own at different stages of my life. Hearing her tell her own story made me feel like she was right here sharing her very personal story. Thank you Mary Louise Kelly!

Thank you Cassidy for letting your light shine and in doing so have given others the courage to speak up at times when it might be easier or less confrontational to remain quiet. Our country needs you and others like you!

A piece of history that was waiting to be written!
Revisado: 10-10-23
This is proof that it is never too late to keep a promise to tell one’s story! Thank you Heather B. Moore for taking time to hear Rita’s story and exploring this piece of history about WW II’s impact on a the people living in Indonesia. The talent of the narrator in being the voice of so many people is so well done. I will definitely want to find other books written by Heather B. Moore and books narrated by Bianca Amato. Rita’s childhood memories of the war and how it impacted not only her own family but others is one I will always remember, as well as her courage, her gratitude, her love for her family and her faith through it all.
