Historia
Rome, 77 B.B. The corrupt Senator Dolabella is about to go on trial for his crimes. But Dolabella owns the jury. He’s hired the best lawyers in the city. And he’s very willing to use violence against those who oppose him. In all of Rome, no man dares accept the role of prosecutor—until, against all odds, an unknown twenty-three-year-old steps out to lead the case, defend the people of the city, and defy the power of the ruling elite. That lawyer’s name is Gaius Julius Caesar.

Caesar Fan Fiction
Revisado: 01-25-25
This is a fun listen, although it seemed more to me like fan fiction than a plausible story of Caesar’s life. Caesar, Marius and Sulla behave and are voiced like Simba, Mustafa and Scar, respectively. But the action moves along and I looked forward to finding out what would happen next.

Journalist Patricia Evangelista came of age in the aftermath of a street revolution that forged a new future for the Philippines. Three decades later, in the face of mounting inequality, the nation discovered the fragility of its democratic institutions under the regime of strongman Rodrigo Duterte.

Gripping account of complex and horrific recent history of Philippines
Revisado: 01-21-24
I read this book in hope of better understanding how Duterte came to and maintained power during widely publicized extrajudicial killings. The author restricts her story mostly to her own observations, which adds authenticity, and does not necessarily attempt to explain why these events happened beyond the explanations her interviewees provide. Nonetheless, it’s a gripping story and well worth the time.
I note I am an American and my sense is this book is written for an American audience. Filipino terms are explained and Tagalog/Filipino expressions are translated.
The narrator speaks mostly with an American accent, but makes the somewhat distracting choice to imitate Duterte’s thick Filipino accent when quoting his statements.

Historia
Abraham Lincoln, unlike most of his political brethren, kept organized Christianity at arm’s length. He never joined a church and only sometimes attended Sunday services with his wife. But as he came to appreciate the growing political and military importance of the Christian churches, and when death touched the Lincoln household in an awful, intimate way, the erstwhile skeptic effectively evolved into the nation’s first evangelical president. The war, he told Americans, was in some fashion divine retribution for the sin of slavery.

Thoughtful examination of Lincoln and American religion
Revisado: 07-04-23
I read a lot of Lincoln history and still found this book fresh and informative on the history of Christianity in 19th century America and what we can tell about Lincoln’s views on it. I feel that I have better understanding of his thinking and especially the Second Inaugural Address. I learned about the book from American History Hit podcast and enjoyed that interview, as well.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

Alternative viewpoints
Revisado: 02-08-23
This lecture series worked very well after Mike Duncan’s History of Rome podcast by adding new layers of detail and, in particular, exploring alternative theories of Roman history and the evidence (or lack thereof) behind each theory.
