Historia
The story of the wars and conquests initiated by the first Crusade and its successors is itself so compelling that most accounts move quickly from describing the Pope's calls to arms to the battlefield. In this highly original and enjoyable new book, Christopher Tyerman focuses on something obvious but overlooked: the massive, all-encompassing, and hugely costly business of actually preparing a crusade.

Detailed analysis, Poor narration
Revisado: 03-14-19
Tyerman has assembled a plethora of details regarding the way Crusading leaders recruited armies, financed campaigns and the logistics behind it that reveal a rarely discussed, and yet enlightening side of the crusades. Unfortunately, the narrator's cadence can distract from the material at times. The odd way in which he ends every sentence drew me out of the mindset at times, not to mentioned there are a few lines throughout in which the narrator says the same line twice.

Historia
The Crusades is an authoritative, accessible single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. Thomas Asbridge - a renowned historian who writes with "maximum vividness" (Joan Acocella, The New Yorker) - covers the years 1095 to 1291 in this big, ambitious, listenable account of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

Great, But Not What I Expected . . .

Should be called "The History of Science Fiction"
Revisado: 12-22-18
While Gary Wolfe does a good enough job here, the lecture wasn't what I expected based on the title. I was looking for more specifics in regards to the literary structure of the greatest works of Sci-Fi. What I got instead was a lecture describing the history of science fiction, its evolution into the genre it is today, and sub-genres within it. Dr. Wolfe gives the synopsis for numerous popular works of Sci-Fi, but I feel he would have been better served going into detail about what was so successful about a few books, and examining their structure (through examples such as the Hero's Journey, etc.) rather than giving an account of the plot before moving on.
This is not to say that I did not enjoy it, as I got a much better understanding of how the genre grew over time, and have greatly expanded my reading list using the dozens of recommendations mentioned. However, I dont feel as though I have a better understanding of "How Great Science Fiction Works," as the title suggests.
P.S. as an aside, beware that in his synopses, Dr. Wolfe spoils some major plot points of many classic works of science fiction. I understand that is somewhat unavoidable in a lecture series discussing the works in question, but it bothered me that it was done in such a cavalier way without warning. I found myself considering whether i should skip forward when he was summarizing some works I'm interested in reading so that I wouldn't hear spoilers, which was frustrating as I'd rather not have to concern myself with that kind of thing while I'm listening.
