Nearly 40 years ago, a New York State Library archivist discovered 12,000 pages of extraordinary records from the original Dutch colony on Manhattan. After decades of painstaking translation, the documents became the primary source for this breathtaking history of early New York.

Comprehensive
Revisado: 12-15-12
Have not finished this book yet (about 1/2 way thru), but I am enjoying it. It is a very comprehensive and detailed account of the founding of colonies at Manhattan and Albany. Lots of background information on the key figures and what roles they played in the formation of New York. Highly recommend it to colonial America history buffs.

Historia
The English had long dreamed of colonizing America, especially after Sir Francis Drake brought home Spanish treasure and dramatic tales from his raids in the Caribbean. Ambitions of finding gold and planting a New World colony seemed within reach when, in 1606, Thomas Smythe extended overseas trade with the launch of the Virginia Company. But from the beginning the American enterprise was a disaster.

Broad perspective of the colonization of America
Revisado: 11-20-12
My English ancestors were founders in both the Massachusetts and Plymouth colonies (on which I have thus far focused my research & learning of colonial history). This was the first time I explored the foundation of the Virginia colonies. I was very pleased that this book went into the perspective of the contemporary English thinking of that age. I gained insight into the foundation of all American colonies that I had not gleaned from any other source heretofore.

Forgotten Patriots is the first-ever account of what took place in these hellholes. The result is a unique perspective on the Revolutionary War as well as a sobering commentary on how Americans have remembered our struggle for independence---and how much we have forgotten.

Interesting perspective on the Revoluntary War
Revisado: 09-21-12
I had just finished listening to a book on George Washington's life, so I thought this would be a good tie in to the knowledge gained from that book. References to Gen. Washington are minimal in this book, but it does present an aspect of the Revoluntary War (behind the scenes look at the men captured by the enemy) that I had never given any thought to before. This narrative has also given me a perspective on Tory activities during this war that I was unaware of. That said, this book contains disturbing facts about how badly the American captives were treated by the Britisth, and goes on and on and on presenting those facts. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars, because I feel that there is valuable information presented, but it does get a bit dull at times, but then held my attention again in the last 3 chapters.

The dust storms that terrorized America's High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since, and the stories of the people that held on have never been fully told. Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist and author Timothy Egan follows a half-dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region.

Feel the grit of the "Dust Bowl!"
Revisado: 10-25-11
This was a great listen! Very well narrated. The history and statistics of this region of the US were personalized by following the stories of various families or individuals throughout this era. I could feel the hunger pangs and the grit of the dust storms while I was listening to this compelling tale. When these folks thought it couldn't get any worse, it did, time after time. So interesting to hear why these folks stayed and how they coped.
