Beautiful setting-I have hiked the Winding Stair area of southeast Oklahoma, so that made it extra fun to read. Compelling dual timeline stories with people you care about. Little known history brought to life. Highly recommend Shelterwood.

Historia
In this gripping biography, acclaimed author Harlow Giles Unger paints an intimate portrait of the heroic young French soldier who, at 19, renounced a life of luxury in Paris and Versailles to fight and bleed for liberty - at Brandywine, Valley Forge, and Yorktown. A major general in the Continental army, he quickly earned the love of his troops, his fellow commanders, and his commander in chief, George Washington, who called him his "adopted son".

A remarkable story
Revisado: 02-20-25
Most Americans have heard of Lafayette and know this Frenchman fought in the American Revolution. This well-researched biography provides details of these early years-he was 19 when he went to the colonies and pledged his allegiance to freedom. It also provides his experiences and influences in decades of French revolutions-providing a well-described explanation of French efforts and dismal failures to establish constitutional governance. Lafayette was a man of strong principles who married an equally principled woman. Highly recommended book.

Heartbreaking story
Revisado: 11-18-24
Recently my husband and I hiked in the Italian Dolomite Mountains, east of the location of this story-the village of Curon. We learned of the struggles between the native German-speaking population that had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Italian government which was given this area at the end of World War I. So we knew of conflicting positions the people of that region faced during World War II, but not of the flooding of a village when a hydroelectrical dam was constructed. This is not a story with a happy ending but one that brings a personal picture of the hardships people experienced through the stories of fictional characters based on real events.

Historia
Robert Caro's monumental book makes public what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the single most powerful man of his time in the City and in the State of New York. And in telling the Moses story, Caro both opens up to an unprecedented degree the way in which politics really happens—the way things really get done in America's City Halls and Statehouses—and brings to light a bonanza of vital information about such national figures as Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt (and the genesis of their blood feud), about Fiorello La Guardia, John V. Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller.

Sorting through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's never seen before.
