The narrator
Revisado: 04-20-25
The narrator was awful. When I first started to listen her accent and shrill voice were so off putting that I tried to return the box set. For some reason it was not eligible for return so I tried to get used to it. The story and characters were fun so I listened to the whole set. I never did get used to the narrator .

Historia
In the early 2000s, after years of hard work and determination to breakthrough as an actor, Bethany Joy Lenz was finally cast as one of the leads on the hit drama One Tree Hill. Her career was about to take off, but her personal life was slowly beginning to unravel. What none of the show’s millions of fans knew, hidden even from her costars, was her secret double life in a cult. An only child who always wanted a place to belong, Lenz found the safe haven she’d been searching for in a Bible study group with other Hollywood creatives. However, the group soon morphed into something more sinister.

The author’s focus on something that was not there
Revisado: 12-01-24
Many slow parts and breaking out in song were distracting. The reasons for being a member of a cult and not going to take a part in a Broadway play confused me.

Historia
Jodi Taylor’s best-selling series The Chronicles of St. Mary is back with a bang…St. Mary’s has been rebuilt, and it’s business as usual for the history department. But first there’s the little matter of a 17th-century ghost that only Mr. Markham can see. Not to mention the minor inconvenience of being trapped in the Great Fire of London…and an unfortunately timed comfort break at Thermopylae, leaving the fate of the Western world hanging in the balance.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

disappointed in this audiobook
Revisado: 03-19-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If Simon Winchester had tackled this topic, it would have been so much easier to follow. The author tries to do too much with too little editing, jumping from pioneers in medicine and their contributions, to the flu epidemic and how the government handled it, back to biographies of pioneers in medicine, back to the effect of the epidemic on individual cities, keeping no chronological timeline. I think this would have been a lot better if the author had not tried to cover so much information.
Has The Great Influenza turned you off from other books in this genre?
It has turned me off from books authored by John M. Barry.
Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Brick’s performances?
I have listened to several performances by Scott Brick. I will not listen to another. He has a tendency to read in a sing song manner. Also, from time to time he sounds like someone has said, "read it again, with more feeling."
What character would you cut from The Great Influenza?
I don't know. There are so many to consider.

Historia
Born in Sweetwater, West Virginia, with a mop of flaming red hair and a map of the world rendered in port-wine stains on every surface of her body, Garnet Ferrari is used to being an outcast. With her sharp tongue, she has always known how to defend herself against bullies and aggressors but finds she is less adept at fending off the pilgrims who have set up a veritable tent city outside her hilltop home, convinced she is Saint Garnet, healer of skin ailments and maker of miracles.

The story dragged on and on.
Revisado: 03-14-15
What disappointed you about The Patron Saint of Ugly?
I was disappointed in the unnecessary use of racist terms. The story would not have been affected without them.
What was most disappointing about Marie Manilla’s story?
The characters were mostly pretty mean, petty people.
What about Laura Hicks’s performance did you like?
She is a good reader. Characters' voices were varied.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment.

wonderful series
Revisado: 01-31-15
What did you love best about The Dark Horse?
Great characters and setting. Interesting story lines. And the narrator is one of the best I've heard.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dark Horse?
When he cut the dark horse loose and they rode off together.
Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. He's a great narrator.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but it was too long. Loved it.
Any additional comments?
I had read the book and wanted to listen to it. No disappointment at all. They never should have discontinued the TV series!
