Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A Horror Story Alright
Revisado: 12-19-22
A novel idea for sure; spend a few weeks writing a lightweight kid’s story, wrap it with the author's reputation, make it excruciatingly long so the physical book is as heavy and imposing as past novels, then watch the sales roar in. Unfortunately, the tale is so thin and ludicrous that any YA reading it would realize this story is going nowhere very slowly, would jump up after the first chapter, indignantly yell Boring, Boring, throw the book to the floor, and just re-read ‘Hunger Games” to enjoy what this book might have been while trying to wash this disappointment and stupidness from his brain. In the Audible version, the reader is great, but he can’t save this travesty.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Entertaining, Lightweight Story, Superb Narration
Revisado: 08-27-22
Mr. Scalzi pulls off a novel, lightweight, and entertaining science fiction story, unencumbered by a need to explain how the central concept works. Mr. Quinto's narration is perfect, we need more from him.

Cliche beginning, an unlikely, boring central plot and a laughable ending depicting both the protagonist and the Corps out of character.

Historia
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Virgil Flowers Is Missing
Revisado: 12-20-21
John Sandford is one of my favorite authors and I have most of his 'Prey' series narrated by Richard Ferrone. I do, however, have ALL of the Virgil Flowers series narrated by Eric Conger. Flowers is a relatively laid-back special investigator wearing civilian clothes and whose main affectation is wearing music band tee shirts and having longish hair. He's a regular guy driving a Toyota SUV, loves the outdoors, doesn't like carrying his handgun and seldom does, fishes every chance he gets, and loves his women. The stories are complex with multiple crimes swirling around the main investigation and Sandford finds many opportunities to work in humor, sometimes at the expense of Flowers.
Anyway, after listening to all these books, Eric Conger IS Virgil Flowers and Richard Ferrone is not. Ferrone doing Flowers in this book is just wrong and the difference is grating, much as I like Ferrone in the 'Prey' series.

Historia
Massive fleets of unknown origin had simultaneously appeared across the globe, attacking major cities and small towns. It was a violent display of full-spectrum global dominance - swift and clinical, rendering much of the world's military forces into smoldering piles of ash before they even had a chance to respond. First contact was nothing less than a devastating surprise attack.

Pinchot is as usual, superb. The author’s writing is untethered to reality ln any circumstance, and this brief intro is loaded with interminable fill.

Revisado: 01-08-20
A young, former CIA and NSA cyber analyst first participated at the highest levels in the mass collection of private citizen information ostensibly for defense against terrorists. He comes to believe these secret programs are not only ineffective but illegal, and at great personal risk and cost reveals them to the world. Although vindicated in the public outrage and numerous court cases and changes made by corporate giants such as Apple, he remains in exile to avoid the vengeance of an embarrassed US government, a fascinating and uplifting tale of a brilliant David bringing Goliath to its knees.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Guns that shoot needles against 15’ tall lizards? Ridiculous, unless of course you’re a kid who just wants an action story. The lizards also had offices and medical wards. Tough to imagine those ergonomics.
