Historia
When it was first published, The Conscience of a Conservative reignited the American conservative movement and made Barry Goldwater a political star. It influenced countless conservatives in the United States and helped to lay the foundation for the Reagan Revolution in 1980. Just as vital today as it was then, this book addresses many topics that could be torn from today's headlines.

Clear & True
Revisado: 10-22-24
Most of which Mr. Goldwater stated is true or his own personal values. I think this is a good book for those interested in knowing what a conservative is and/or reaffirming your conservative values. Besides the Cold War bit at the end, most of which remain arguments of today. No matter how wrong you may think he is, one cannot ignore his points. The conservatives of old truly made points worth considering when thinking about the individual and implications of the state.

Historia
America is undergoing a massive experiment: It is moving, in fits and starts, toward a multiracial democracy, something few societies have ever done. But the prospect of change has sparked an authoritarian backlash that threatens the very foundations of our political system. Why is democracy under assault here, and not in other wealthy, diversifying nations? And what can we do to save it?

Educational book through and through. If you strongly believe in "American Exceptionalism" then maybe don't read. If you are open to the concepts of global analysis, the same analysis that built our democracy, then this is the book for you.

Historia
In The Conquest of Bread, first published in 1892, Kropotkin set out his ideas on how his heightened idealism could work. It was all the more extraordinary because he was born into an aristocratic land-owning family - with some 1,200 male serfs - though from his student years his liberal views and his fixation on the need for social change saw him take a revolutionary path. This led rapidly to decades of exile. It is a passionate, even a fierce polemic for dramatic social change.

Do Rolled Eyes Get Fed
Revisado: 04-02-24
Krop is an excellent story teller and writer. However, Anarchist-Communism in the context of this book I'd outdated and not viable. The reader needs to understand the time period where in which the writer lived and what he was unaware of at the time to really understand this book.

Historia
There is no better guide than Paul Krugman to basic economics, the ideas that animate much of our public policy. Likewise, there is no stronger foe of zombie economics, the misunderstandings that just won’t die. In Arguing with Zombies, Krugman tackles many of these misunderstandings, taking stock of where the United States has come from and where it’s headed in a series of concise, digestible chapters. Drawn mainly from his popular New York Times column, they cover a wide range of issues, organized thematically and framed in the context of a wider debate.

Elastic Truth
Revisado: 02-19-24
Others tend to put their truth, Krugman just tells THE truth. The writer made the book essentially to show where he's stood on the issues for the last 20 or so years (2000-2020). The way things are, he was right most all the time. The book does a wonderful job of showing and reminding the reader of what has happened and why there was a better way of doing things if we would have done them right. He also explains things that are rather complex and simplifies them like the housing market bubble. At least the food has gotten better over time, if not our monetary policy.

A Timeless Classic
Revisado: 02-09-24
This book is a must read for critical thinkers. In order to cut through the thick walls of societal norms you must be able to look at the walls around you, accept that you may have painted them, but realize they are not infallible. This book takes you past the walls any reader may have put up for themselves.
The writer does a great job with simple historical examples that shine a light on the fallacy of living in any society, then applies a modern context. As noble as the writer is, they provide the lense that even this book could be perceived as a flawed opinion allowing the reader to even question the words they are listening to. Great book that promotes liberty and democracy.

Historia
After more than 2,300 years, the Greek philosopher Aristotle still remains one of the most influential thinkers who has ever lived. There was hardly any field of human knowledge in existence during his day in which he did not make a major contribution. Additionally, he probed areas which were never before examined. Indeed, one could make the claim that no individual person has ever known as much about this world as Aristotle. His analyses of zoology and logic paved the way for modern forensic techniques, and for which every scientist down to this day owes him a debt of gratitude.

A Book for a Novice
Revisado: 08-07-23
This book does a terrific job introducing key concepts of politics known to man for a millennium. It really tackles all portions of building a person, a city, and a society for peace and prosperity.
However, the reader should understand this is not necessarily a Bible. This book should be seen in the lens of 400BC. Some factors can be considered in the modern day. It should be stated the writer had no sense of modern human rights, but he truly is more humane and noble than many others in the current era in regards to some topics.

Economic Missteps
Revisado: 03-14-23
This is an amazingly informative book on all social topics. I highly recommend this book for any type of sensitivity training and lesson planning around human rights (gender studies, respectful workplace, etc). My one critique of the book is how economics is taught in the context of the book. As a person who has read plenty of economic works, the way the author approaches casual listeners on this topic is abrasive in nature and incorrect. The assumption the author makes that capitalism is inherently racist is patently false. Capitalism, as defined by Adam Smith in the wealth of nations, has been the diversifying factor in our society.
The economic portion portrays such a harsh notion of capitalism for novices who most likely do not read economic theory and philosophy. I highly recommend Wealth of Nations, The General Theory, and Socialism: Utopian and Scientific.

Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1917), by Vladimir Lenin, describes the function of financial capital in generating profits from imperialist colonialism as the final stage of capitalist development to ensure greater profits. The essay is a synthesis of Lenin's modifications and developments of economic theories that Karl Marx formulated in Das Kapital (1867).

Curious
Revisado: 10-20-22
The book was decent. The reader makes an interesting mistake in the recording. Not really sure how that was missed. Their voice pitch made it hard to listen to at points because they would change octaves.
VL wrote this well. However, there was immediate resolutions to the points he made in this book. Antitrust laws and their evolution have completely made this book outdated to some extent. one could argue modern day America has returned to a trust or monopolized system, but not nearly a return to the era of the early 1900s. Perhaps the only market this represents is the Korean economy with Chaebols. Even then, Korea has more small businesses than most countries in the world.
