Same as title. Short and interesting. Just listened to this, and the other helpful podcast on vaccines in preparation for my trip to Peru. Thanks guys!

I wanted a high level history book that traces the history of Peru, and this book did a good job providing that. It covers Peruvian history from the pre-written history period up through today. It spent perhaps a disproportionate time describing the conflict between the Spanish empire and the Incan empire, but that part was also the most interesting and engagingly told. The narrator was difficult to listen to. Every sentence had the same odd lilting intonation, and he mispronounced some English words here and there. I was able to eventually get used to the narrator and still enjoy the book overall.

What a wild ride! I thought I had the trajectory of the book figured out a couple of times and it kept twisting and turning! So cool!

Loved the way this brought the different threads of the Ryira books all together. Great read! Makes me want to re-read the original books again.

The most helpful thing I’ve read on hearing God

Other than the Bible, this is the most helpful resource I’ve found so far about listening to God. It’s very clear and down to earth, suffused with scripture, and helpful from both a theological and practical standpoint. I appreciated all the examples, quotes, and pointers. There were a couple of chapters that seem sort of like a tangent to me and didn’t add much to the book. But overall it was outstanding, and I think the book was a gift from God to me, to help me hear Him better. The narration didn’t blow me away, but it was fine overall.

The original Light Angel trilogy was really good, although darker than I prefer. The Lightbringer series was amazing and I listened to it twice. It had the same gritty unabashed look at the darkness in the world and in human hearts, but with more theological depth, hope, and light. I’d hoped this new Night Angel installment would continue on that trajectory. Instead it regressed to as much, or more, darkness and hopelessness than even the original series. Also there was minimal input from characters with faith in the One God, which could have provided a much-needed anchor and ray of light. Hopefully this is a set up for light and hope and redemption dawning in later series.

Hats off to Brent Weeks for being creative and experimental with the partial first person point of view. However I hope he lets that go for future books. It didn’t work well for me. It was a relief every time the story shifted to get out of Kylar’s head and go to the third person Vi point of view. Also the ship scene went on and on and on and on. Eventually it felt repetitive and claustrophobic.

I enjoyed the expanded world revealed in this book. The Blue Mage monastery, although maybe a little too obvious a nod to the kung fu movies tradition, was still a lot of fun. Faina was a good new character, and I liked Mama K’s continued depth and development.

I’m still hopeful Brent will turn the series around and I think he’s a thoughtful person and extremely talented writer. Even though this book was painful to listen to at times, and hard to follow at times (in terms of physical structures being described etc), it was still an engaging read, and kept my attention during a long road trip. Maybe at the end of the new part of the series we’ll be able to look back at this as a dark middle chapter, like Empire Strikes Back, that was hard but still an important part of the story arc.

Finally, Brent if you read these reviews, and feel discouraged, I hope you’ll be reminded that part of the reason for the fairly strong negative reactions from your fans is because you’ve set the bar high in your prior writings, and because we’ve become emotionally engaged with your story and characters, and are invested in wanting you to do right by them. :-)

And I thought Simon Vance did a great job narrating.

This book is now 80 years old, and yet the ideas and clarity of thought and timelessness of the analogies make it read in some ways as if it was written yesterday. I owe a lot of gratitude to C.S. Lewis for enriching my thinking on the Christian faith and how it relates to our modern world.

Really engaging and creative story! It had tons of science and I felt like I was in a really creative college science class sometimes. The science didn’t bog down the story too much though, and it kept moving at a good pace. Effective use of flashbacks kept two compelling storylines going simultaneously. The reader was fabulous. It’s the same reader as the Bobiverse series, and this book had similar vibes in some ways (although a totally different story line).

A very engaging lecture, and by a knowledgeable author who isn’t trying to sell you something. It doesn’t cover everything by any means, but addresses some core principles, dispels some popular myths, and includes personal stories by the author that keep you engaged.
