Historia
Roger and Penny Scaggs seemed a poster couple for family values. Evangelical Christians living in booming Austin, Texas, in the mid-1990s, they were respected leaders in their church and community. As Roger diligently worked his way up the high-tech corporate ladder, Penny kept a pristine home and coached similarly devout young women on how to be perfect wives. But on a windy March evening, this godly woman met the devil head-on.

So Much Padding
Revisado: 07-01-23
The case is itself pretty dull, and the author adds so much trivial detail that I lost interest. In 2023, I don't need a breakdown on how fingerprinting works. The interviews with detectives and witnesses are also very impersonal and sound like press release statements.

Historia
In 1979, a fiery preacher named Jane Whaley attracted a small group of followers with a promise that she could turn their lives around. In the years since, Whaley’s following has expanded to include thousands of congregants across three continents. Based on hundreds of interviews, secretly recorded conversations, and thousands of pages of documents, Pulitzer Prize winner Mitch Weiss and Holbrook Mohr’s Broken Faith is a terrifying portrait life inside the Word of Faith Fellowship, and the harrowing account of one family who escaped after two decades.

Outrageous stories of abuse enabled by local and state government. This book is both encouraging and deeply infuriating.

Historia
At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blonde and her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep to themselves - until the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell had fled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Lori's children back in Idaho - Tylee and JJ - who hadn't been seen alive in five months.

Kind of Shallow
Revisado: 05-18-22
Since the Vallow case hasn't been tried in court yet, this book is limited to what information is available in news and documentary coverage. No interviews with police or peosecutors, very few quotes from witnesses. It's a food summary of the case so far, but I'll be on the lookout for a better researched book once the case resolves.
Shaun Grindell is a gift, as always.

Fascinating Story
Revisado: 05-05-22
I loved this! I couldn't stop listening. Brian Deer is a great writer and a relentless fact finder. A full accounting from him about the Wakefield scandal is a treat. Kleinman is a solid narrator, but it's a little hard to tell the difference between quotes and Deer's voice, since he reads them in the same tone.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Just Amazing Work
Revisado: 04-20-22
I love Jim Clemente, and he does an incredible job narrating this audio documentary. The story is paced well. It gives enough detail to capture the horror of the crimes without wallowing in the gore. It was amazing how many people participated in the book. I really felt like I was immersed in the case. I also appreciated how the book didn't focus on the criminal, but on the victims and the investigation. They don't even name him until the case is solved, in a, "Here's the name for the arrest warrant," way. It's well done, and what the criminal deserves. A fantastic listen.

Riveting Storytelling
Revisado: 04-16-22
Whether you like Pirro or not, she's an amazing writer and storyteller. I very much enjoyed her account of the Durst investigation, and loved the insight into her own career in law enforcement. I was impressed by her brash practicality working in a male-dominated field, and by her passion protecting women from abuse. This book has the feel of going out with Pirro for drinks and some juicy gossip. A great listen.

Painfully Honest Personal Account
Revisado: 06-09-21
I couldn't stop listening to this book once I started. Kent's account of his upbringing and life in his mother's orbit is brutally honest and introspective. I came away from the book not liking him, but understanding him and his experiences. He does an outstanding job humanizing a sensational story.
John Glouchevitch's narration was beautiful. He voices different characters well and has great pacing.

Classic Abuser Babble
Revisado: 04-19-21
Ever wonder how abusers justify their actions to themselves? This. This right here.
"She's the crazy one!"
"I was just defending myself!"
"Ask [reliable source] and they'll agree with me!"
"She said later it was all her fault!"
"She kept coming back!"
I tapped out halfway through Chapter 5 because I got tired of listening to Simpson smear his ex-wife. My heart goes out to the Brown and Goodman families, and I applaud their decision to publish this. It's a window into a monster's mind.

Jesse Einstein has a great voice, too. He's a little choppy at times, but he'll be fantastic after more experience.
