Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

White Guy Loved Book
Revisado: 12-30-22
There are almost 19,000 five star reviews of this book. I don’t know what one more will add except that I’m a middle aged white guy. I’ve had my fair share of education having graduated from law school and getting a high school teaching certificate. It is a shame that it took 52 years and this book (and others like it) to open my eyes to American history and the very intentional system of white supremacy created at the birth of our nation. Thank you for sharing this gift with us. I pledge to be more like Einstein, except for the math and science part.

Historia
Will Jawando tells a deeply affirmative story of hope and respect for men of color. As a boy growing up outside DC, Will, who went by his Nigerian name, Yemi, never quite fit in. He was a Black kid with a divorced white mother, a frayed relationship with his biological father, and teachers who scolded him for being disruptive in class. Eventually, he became close to Kalfani, a kid he looked up to. Years after he got the call that Kalfani was dead, another casualty of gun violence, Will looks back on the extraordinary mentors that enabled him to thrive.

A Must Read Narrative
Revisado: 10-25-22
This was a good old-fashioned underdog success story. Will overcame so much adversity to achieve his goals and dreams. But, it was way more than that because Will introduced me to life of a somewhat ordinary story of growing up black in America. As a white middle-aged guy who grew up in the Midwest, I didn't hear or see too many stories like this. Many of the narratives I heard came from the news or entertainment industry. Those are misleading at best. This should be required reading in high school. Well done, Will.

Historia
Based on 15 years of research, To Be Honest explains how four factors (Clear Identity, Accountability, Governance and Cross-Functional Relationships) affect honesty, justice, and purpose within a company. When these factors are absent or ineffective, the organizational conditions compel employees to choose dishonesty and self-interest. But when done well, the organization is 16 times more likely to have people tell the truth, behave fairly and serve a greater good.

Catalog of Musts for Good Culture
Revisado: 10-25-22
Ron provides an abundance of data and anecdotes to illustrate that honesty is not only the best policy, but the only way to run a productive company. Anyone responsible for corporate culture should read this book like its a course in best practices and not-so-good pitfalls. He shares very practical advice and insights. I highly recommend it for anyone who believes (or doubts) that truth and honestly belong in both our personal and professional lives.

Historia
Laila Tarraf was the chief people officer for Peet’s Coffee and Tea, the iconic Berkeley coffee roaster, but she had a secret: She was failing in the most important relationships in her life. Yes, she was a strong and effective business leader, the successful daughter of immigrants, and the mother of a toddler, but she was disconnected from her own feelings and had little patience for those of others. All that changed, however, when three of the people most important to her - her husband, father, and mother - died in quick succession.

Vulnerable and Real
Revisado: 03-09-22
I was so impressed and moved by this story. I expected a book that referenced a personal tragedy and then focused on how that changed the workplace. I was wrong. Laila took us deep inside her personal life sharing intimate details and "failures." It is such a brave and powerful book. It speaks to the professional, but more importantly, the person. Her message is clear - we need to bring the whole person - the head and the heart - into our homes and offices.

Authentic and Inspiring
Revisado: 04-15-21
I purchased this book for my daughter. However, while on vacation, I started listening and am so glad I did. It started with the narrator - Kara. I was glad to hear her tell the story. It made it more personal. Her lessons were simple and impactful. Her tenacity and confidence are inspiring. I loved that she created her path. Once on it, many doors and opportunities presented themselves. That’s how it is supposed to work. This should be a must read for all of the uncertain or confused college kids out there.
