Like most people, my familiarity with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works mostly revolves around the Sherlock Holmes stories. A few years ago, I started reading The White Company, but never finished. I'm not sure why other than life events getting in the way. This time around, I gave the audiobook a try.

This is one fun book. The cast of characters is memorable and easy to root for. There's Alleyne, the pious and naive young man freshly emerged from a sheltered abbey. We also meet Hordle John, a burly, blustery fellow who breaks the mold of said abbey and is cast out. And soon after comes Sam Aylward, a veteran archer who is gregarious and charming. The narrator Mr. Catterall breathes life into them all. My favorite character has been Aylward, and Catterall's voices him perfectly and just how I imagined him.

The three heroes form an odd couple that are immediately likable and fun. In the company of an aging knight named Sir Nigel, the White Company travels about performing daring, chivalrous deeds. Sometimes the adventure are comical, other times serious and dire.

Reportedly, Doyle was particularly fond of his historical fictions and you can tell he had fun writing this one. The characters are great, the descriptions of the countryside are vivid, and the adventures wild. If you like following the exploits of brave knights, this is a no brainer. The 14 1/2 hrs flew by for me.

I'll admit -- when I saw the runtime (1 hour/42 minutes), my first thought was "How can you pull off a murder mystery in such a short amount of time?" But this one does just that, and it's a whole lot of fun. The story gets right to the point, presenting the murder and then the cast of colorful characters. It's a total nod to classic, corny whodunits. Right down to the character names and events that unfold. It's a breezy, clever tale that had me guessing until the very end.

I'll also admit that for a hot second, I feared the narrator was going to be overly droll...but then he breaks into unique voices and shows plenty of range. That dryness otherwise suits the story well and overall it was just a fun little story.

Definitely worth it -- it's fun, fast, well-written, and well-narrated!

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my all-time favorite video games. I played it through with female V, so I got to experience the game with Cherami Leigh's voice acting front and center. She was absolutely amazing in that game and a big reason why I loved it so much. That being said, I was very excited to see that this Cyberpunk novel featured her narrating.

She does not disappoint. I'd say the overall story is good, not great. If you like Cyberpunk 2077, there's little about this book that you won't like. It has the same gritty vibe as the game. The main characters are interesting and well-rounded. Do they hold up to some of the particularly strong ones in the game like Judy, Panam, Jackie or V? Nah, but they are still solid. This is an overall heist story, with a lot of twists and turns that keep it interesting. It lost me briefly at a few times, but I was generally able to keep up and get the gist of what was going on.

What buoys this entire experience is the homerun performance by Cherami Leigh. She breathes unique life into each character, and inflects all the right ranges of emotions for the given situation. It's probably some of the best audiobook narration I've experienced, and a testament to how a talented voice actor can elevate a whole experience.

So...if you're a Cyberpunk 2077 fan, particularly one who played through with female V, I don't think you can go wrong with this book. It's a fun revisit to that amazing setting.

I enjoyed Book 1 of this series so much that I dove straight into Doubt, the follow-up. I gave Astray 5 stars and I think Doubt held up the quality overall. It breathed more life and backstory into the main character Nora Devi.

Doubt expands upon the already interesting characters of Nora Devi, her alien AI sidekick Jonah, the conflicted ship captain Liam, and on and on. That's to me the strength of these books -- relatable, diverse and fascinating characters. The politics and slowly unfolding intergalactic drama are also top-notch and, as I said in my review of Astray, fresh and unique amidst countless other sci-fi books...but the characters are what keeps me glued to this series.

A cherry on the sundae for me is that Emily Woo Zeller is the narrator. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my absolute favorite video games of all time, and Ms. Zeller's Panam Palmer is a standout character. So when I decided, after already getting hooked on this series after reading Book 1, to check out the audiobook version for Book 2, I was pleasantly stunned to see the voice of Panam Palmer involved!

Ms. Zeller does an amazing job here too. She has a nice neutral tone for reading the content, but gives distinction to each and every character, male and female, to make them feel so unique and strong. Outstanding performance.
