The hawking of merch and personal services is a bit over the top, but there is insightful information here as well.

Not well served by halting, overly-emoted reading

Sounds like a kindergarten teacher reading to a bunch of five-year-olds, making sure to EMPHASIZE the important WORDS so we don’t MISS anything. Or a comic book with some words in BOLD because we might not get it, otherwise. I’m assuming we’re mostly adults here. Just read what’s on the page and give us some credit. I bought the hardcopy paperback and plan to use it as a reference. There are some excellent one-liners and insightful ideas there, sans the dramatic over-reading.

Good book. Play it at 1.2x or 1.5x

This is a valuable contribution to the genre, but 10 seconds into the Audible version, I thought “Uh Oh!” It is always unfortunate when good material is co-opted by poor narration. In this case, pseudo-dramatic, slow, drawn out, draggy… Still, rather than throw the baby out with the bathwater, I decided to try playing it back at 1.2x speed, and actually ended up listening at 1.5x speed, which is completely intelligible and moves along at a more reasonable clip. This also cuts down the overall time of the audible book from four hours and something to two hours and something.

Fr. Thomas is now departed. This was truly a unique event, never to be repeated.
