Historia
Since it was first published in 2005, Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near and its vision of the future have been influential in spawning a worldwide movement with millions of followers, hundreds of books, major films, and thousands of articles. During the succeeding decade, many of Kurzweil's predictions about technological advancements have been borne out, and their viability has become familiar to the public through such now commonplace concepts. In this entirely new book Ray Kurzweil brings a fresh perspective to advances in the singularity.

Hated this so much
Revisado: 09-01-24
I’m sure this book is wonderful to some. It was incredibly painful to me. I didn’t know what to expect, but I did not expect such tedium. I think it’s a great book for someone with no previous knowledge of philosophy of mind, philosophy of identity and consciousness, and computer technology. But if you have already indulged in learning about those things, this is a pretty painful listen.

Historia
The Los Angeles Times headline screamed: Rocket Scientist Killed in Pasadena Explosion. The man known as Jack Parsons, a maverick rocketeer who helped transform a derided sci-fi plotline into actuality, was at first mourned as a scientific prodigy. But reporters soon uncovered a more shocking story: Parsons had been a devotee of the city’s occult scene.

Shockingly good
Revisado: 04-11-23
I didn’t expect to listen to this whole book. Especially because it started so gruesomely. But then it became a great story about a guy not unlike Howard Hughes or Elon Musk, but poor. Lots of LA history. Lots of rocketry stories. And lots of weirdly dysfunctional living. I really liked this book. Well written!

Amazing book
Revisado: 10-01-22
This book really surprised me. So much history, so well told. It spoke of the culture and history of these ancient civilizations on a level that made them feel contemporary and personal.

Historia
Henry never realized he was special. Sure, he’s an engineer who served his country, but when the virus hit, he found himself alone in a nearly empty world. That’s the key, though: nearly empty. There’s no one left who has the technical know-how to make the world run again...except for Henry. For humanity to survive, he will have to rebuild society out of the motley crew of survivors. It might be impossible, but at the same time, Henry has always loved a challenge.

A unique post apocalypse book
Revisado: 07-28-22
This book and the reading of the book was fun. It has a very down-home, small-town view of an apocalypse. Ex-military farmer-Joe and college cheerleader the sole survivors in their town. There are no monsters or zombies. Like Robinson Crusoe or Swiss Family Robinson the focus is on homesteading and practical concerns. It’s not humorous but I found it both funny and interesting.

Historia
Known to generations of Americans for his stirring call to arms, “Give me liberty or give me death,” Patrick Henry is all but forgotten today as the first of the Founding Fathers to call for independence, the first to call for revolution, and the first to call for a bill of rights. If Washington was the “Sword of the Revolution” and Jefferson, “the Pen,” Patrick Henry more than earned his epithet as “the Trumpet” of the Revolution for rousing Americans to arms in the Revolutionary War.

A timely book
Revisado: 06-14-22
Right now we are in the midst of a great struggle between polarized political parties. As a Liberal, I found that this biography gave me insight into the recent actions and pronouncements of the other true believers on the other party. This could not have been more timely.

Historia
As Earth's faster-than-light spaceship hung in the void between galaxies, Arcot, Wade, Morey and Fuller could see below them, like a vast shining horizon, the mass of stars that formed their own island universe. Morey worked a moment with his slide rule, then said, "We made good time." But suddenly, far off to their left and far to their right, they saw two shining ships paralleling their course....

We live in the future
Revisado: 10-05-21
The best part of this book was how old it is. The things the earth men do, and their attitudes, are so quaint and weird. It’s a good story and well written. And the oddness of the old-fashioned point of view just makes it the more interesting.

Better than ginger beer!
Revisado: 09-10-21
I had to try ginger beer after reading this book. The main character loves it. I don’t think I will love ginger beer, but I did love the book. It feels like the type of art that life later imitates.

Historia
The man on the moon was dead. They called him Charlie. He had big eyes, abundant body hair, and fairly long nostrils. His skeletal body was found clad in a bright red spacesuit, hidden in a rocky grave. They didn’t know who he was, how he got there, or what had killed him. All they knew was that his corpse was 50 thousand years old - and that meant this man had somehow lived long before he ever could have existed.

Great hard sci fi
Revisado: 08-12-21
I just finished “Inherit the Stars" but I highly recommend it. Written in 1977, it’s hard sci fi, no fantasy, lots of science and lots of speculative technology that's become reality in the years since it was written. And a nice complicated mystery involving alien races.

Historia
In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: Global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off. Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

Blue state wet dream
Revisado: 07-29-21
The story was decent. Presentation was well done. Personally I hated the story, which to me reeked of hatred for government and anyone successful. If that’s your bent, this is a great book for you.
