Historia
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

should be mandatory reading
Revisado: 07-17-22
The reading is a bit dry, it would be better in print. However, there is no better book to help everyone understand the viewpoint of those we disagree with, especially in terms of politics. This simply changes the way Americans would argue political issues, and in a good way.

Historia
America is hopelessly divided, but more worryingly, the ideas and “mystic chords of memory” that rest at the cornerstone of our civilization and bind the generations are being severed, attacked, and forgotten. The left has set out to shatter these bonds with a war on American history - the fundamental concepts, institutions, and icons that make our country what it is. And we have failed to protect our history, allowing Hollywood, educators, and the media to rewrite the story of America. We have ignored the invaluable lessons of our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

gets better as it goes on
Revisado: 05-29-22
This was a good reminder of what made this nation and many of its founders great, while acknowledging their faults and providing context for how they should be remembered. The book would benefit from focusing more on just the historical topics and less on the modern attacks, as it would (in my opinion) be more palatable by a wider audience. At the opening is has the hint of a right wing echo chamber, though it doesn't quite play out that way as a whole. Overall, it felt like a fair analysis.

Historia
According to the establishment media, the intelligentsia, and our political chattering class, the greatest threat to American freedom lies in right-wing authoritarianism. We’ve heard that some 75 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump represent the rise of American fascism; that conservatives have allowed authoritarianism to bloom in their midst, creating a grave danger for the republic.

Not just for conservatives.
Revisado: 02-21-22
This book will almost certainly be ignored by anyone that doesn't share Shapiro's political leanings, though that is a shame. I suspect it would be a thought provoking read (or listen) for a left leaning but traditionally liberal audience. It's very informative about the evolution of some major institutions and cultural shift. Factual and specific examples help to avoid the "straw man" arguments. I could do without the bad (and a bit condescending... in an off-putting way) impersonations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, otherwise very well done.

This comprehensive series of 84 lectures features three award-winning historians sharing their insights into this nation's past-from the European settlement and the Revolutionary War through the Civil War, 19th-century industrialization, two world wars, and the present day. These lectures give you the opportunity to grasp the different aspects of our past that combine to make us distinctly American, and to gain the knowledge so essential to recognizing not only what makes this country such a noteworthy part of world history, but the varying degrees to which it has lived up to its ideals.

Anecdotally powerful, but fell short of answers
Revisado: 08-30-20
The human aspect of the stories told by the author can be as brutal and difficult to read as the title would imply. While the book certainly invokes outrage and emotion, it gets repetitive. It becomes the same tragic story told over and over again, and could literally be cut in half with no loss of content. It's light on data, making the scope of the problem hard to capture, and doesn't provide detail on causal factors or context. I was hoping for insight on how the nation failed to follow through on ensuring true abolition after the Civil War, or some connection to our current state of the nation, and got few answers. The author displays limited knowledge of the electoral process, and contradicts himself at least once, which I found difficult to get past. Overall, there was a lot of emotion but not a lot of insight.

Historia
From Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States to the New York Times' 1619 project, the modern Left views American history through the lens of competing oppressions, replacing the traditional understanding that all Americans are part of a shared journey toward the perfection of universal ideals. Their attacks on the values that built our nation, from the rights to free speech and self-defense to the importance of marriage and faith communities, are insidious because they replace each of them with nothing beyond an increased reliance on the government.

A must read for every American
Revisado: 08-30-20
The title was a bit of a turn off, but the content is fantastic. Shapiro provides an excellent overview of American history and the fundamentals of our Constitution. This book gives a better understanding of our founding, the intent of the Constitution, and how the federal government has strayed from that intent. I think Shapiro fairly provides a clear picture of opposing viewpoints, keeping in mind that every American likely has a beliefs along a broad political and cultural spectrum. My sole complaint is in Shapiro's voice impersonations, which can come across as mocking or condescending and diminish an otherwise solid argument. Even those that disagree with Shapiro's argument will gain a better understanding of the conservative point of view.

Historia
Where did writing, culture, and agriculture begin? The Middle East is the cradle of civilization - where humankind once roamed in small groups of hunter-gatherers and foraged for food and shelter, then learned to plant crops and build structures. Today, we are an advanced civilization that has conquered the skies, oceans, and even the moon. To understand how this transformation occurred, take a brief trip back into the history of the Middle East, where it all began.

Today, the US Constitution is the oldest, continually-operating instrument of government in the world. But to think of the Constitution as a fully-formed, canonical document is to miss out on an honest, well-rounded grasp of American history. Now, more than ever, any well-informed citizen should understand how the Constitution lives, breathes, and endures.
