Historia
Amid a great collection of scholarship and narrative history on the Revolutionary War and the American struggle for independence, there is a gaping hole; one that John Ferling’s latest book, Whirlwind, will fill. Books chronicling the Revolution have largely ranged from multivolume tomes that appeal to scholars and the most serious general listeners to microhistories that necessarily gloss over swaths of Independence-era history with only cursory treatment.

Historia
The memory of the Battle of Antietam was so haunting that when, nine months later, Major Rufus Dawes learned another Antietam battle might be on the horizon, he wrote, "I hope not, I dread the thought of the place." In this definitive account, historian D. Scott Hartwig chronicles the single bloodiest day in American history, which resulted in 23,000 casualties.

Great Followup
Revisado: 01-28-25
This is the second volume about the Maryland campaign and this is the narrator who should have also done the first volume. This is a detailed examination of the battle of Antietam as well as the aftermath of the battle up to McClellan's dismissal as the head of the Army of the Potomac. Very well done and riveting.

Narration not the best
Revisado: 01-04-25
This is an excellent detailed book about the start of Lee’s Maryland campaign. The narrator though mispronounces military terms that became annoyingly like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Historia
As the new year of 1944 began in Italy, the Allied army’s momentum had ground to a halt just south of the vaunted German Gustav Line of defense, far short of their initial objective of liberating Rome by Christmas. The fighting up the Italian peninsula had been brutal—rugged terrain, fierce resistance, terrible weather. While Allied leaders in London prepared for the cross-Channel invasion of France later that spring, the war in the West hinged in Italy.

Well written
Revisado: 11-28-24
This book is a great more detailed look at the race for Rome and how the Anzio and Monte Cassino battles interacted with each other and with the planning for Overlord. I found the book took a balanced view from all sides. Holland's research is good as always.

Historia
On 31st October 1917, as the day's light faded, the Australian Light Horse charged against their enemy. Eight hundred men and horses galloped four miles across open country, towards the artillery, rifles and machine guns of the Turks occupying the seemingly unassailable town of Beersheba. What happened in the next hour changed the course of history. This brave battle and the extraordinary adventures that led to it are brought vividly to life by Australia's greatest storyteller, Peter FitzSimons.

This, as most of Peter Fitzsimons books, is well researched and written. Narrator was perfect and it covered an area I was not as familiar with. Hard to put down and well worth the credit for any military history buff.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

In February 1944, in one of the most astonishing battles of World War II, a ragtag collection of British clerks, drivers, doctors, muleteers, and other base troops, stiffened by a few dogged Yorkshiremen and a handful of tank crews, managed to defeat a much larger and sophisticated contingent of some of the finest infantry in the Japanese army on their march toward India.

Fills in gaps
Revisado: 06-16-24
This book fills in a good gap on what occurred in Burma, a forgotten area of World War II. Well researched, as most of Mr. Holland‘s books are the courage and outstanding fighting abilities of the Allied troops involved in this battle were well documented. I could have done without the last chapter involving the conversation between Mr. Holland and the narrator, but it did not detract from the overall excellence of this book.

Historia
In 1961, the new president John F. Kennedy, inherited an ill-conceived, poorly executed invasion of Cuba that failed miserably and set in motion the events that put the U.S. and the Soviet Union on a collision course that nearly started a war that would have enveloped much of the world. Extensively researched and vividly imagined, The Shadow of War brings to life the many threads that lead to the building crisis between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1962.
