Fossil filled fiction that makes real world issues accessible…

Skillfully crafted, West of The Sea, by author/narrator Stephanie Willing digs up some serious life issues and makes them more accessible and less scary for the younger set. Through Haven, and her older sister, Margie, readers learn all sorts of science-y things (ecological, geological, meteorological…) while also following the characters as they encounter issues relating to personal growth, identity, and mental health. I especially liked how Willing presented the material in a manner that is so true to life while in parallel to a plot line that also puts forth some monstrous myths.

Author/narrator Tanya Eby delivers an account of her experiences of dating on the cusp of 50 that is much more than a diatribe of midlife. Readers are bound to identify with one or more threads of Eby’s work; be it through personal experience or that of others they are close to.

Although my own path differs in some ways from the author’s, I was straight up gobsmacked at just how much I could relate to; especially of the “things we think, but don’t say (or, in my case, work on)” variety.

From parenting to pandemic living and friendships to feelings of self doubt, Eby yanks the covers off of everything she has encountered, worked on, and continues to navigate. The Tuesday Girl is searingly honest, raw, sometimes sad, and often funny. Read it yourself and share it with others. If you don’t already have an Erin in your life, go out and get one - stat!

My Darling Girl captures the light and dark of mother/daughter relationships. The twists of this tale will have the reader wondering over the fine line between psychological thriller and horror. Performed perfectly by Hillary Huber with Kitty Hendrix, My Darling Girl makes the brain buzz.

A “Hare”-Raising Read

The perfect pairing of Elizabeth Hand and Carol Monda is something sought whenever the itch for terrifying tales takes hold.

A Haunting on the Hill feeds this need, with its sublime soundscape that more often than not lurks, almost imperceptibly, in the darker corners of this work.

Hand pitches toward the poetic in many of her descriptive passages and Monda lends her signature sultry purr to this nod to Jackson. A treat is to be found among the tricks as Monda performs the songs woven through the architecture of this “hare”-raising read.

Horse makes for an Interesting intersection of contemporary issues, animals, and art history.

Littrell and Flanagan's performances were of particular note, though all of the POVs were solidly executed in the audiobook.

Impressive research on the part of Brooks as related to the story of Lexington and the people/places of the era.

This was read as a book club selection and has left quite a soul-satisfying impression on me. While some readers may find a certain level of predictability within, I feel that the humanity, connection points, and relatability found in its characters raise this book up to another level.

Marin Ireland has fast become a favorite narrator to follow. Her performance here is accessible and she delivers both comedic timing and the heartstring pulling bits quite nicely. Michael Urie as Marcellus? Simply put: perfectly cast.

The fact that this is Shelby Van Pelt's first novel is fairly remarkable itself. Highly recommend!

When the family’s summer schedule goes haywire single mom, Rachel, finds herself taking a plunge lakeside with her twin boys, two puppies, her ex in-laws, and more toaster tarts than anyone can stomach.

Hovland’s first in the Mommy Wars series comes to life with narrator Petrea Burchard’s excellent comedic timing and solid character work. Handled with equal ease by Burchard are the story’s romantic escapades and Rachel’s rediscovery of herself.

Rachel, Out Of Office is a thoroughly entertaining listen.

Okay, so I am totally hooked on this listen about twins who spontaneously combust, their caretaker, her BFF (sort of,) the BFF’s politician husband, and a dude named Carl... It is both wonderfully weird and sentimental.

This is my first #KevinWilson title and @marinireland ‘s narration has me in awe of her subtle, yet specific character work. 🎧📚👍🏻

Gritty and believable characters come to life through Huber's performance of Gardner's mystery, Before She Disappeared.

A self designated seeker of lost souls, Frankie Elkin, embarks on a dangerous mission to find a missing girl on the streets of Boston. Through twists and turns in the case she faces much more darkness in reliving her own past.
