Historia
A young American walks into Sicily's Palazzo d'Oro during the '60s. Penniless, but swaggering with youth and burgeoning artistic talent, he accepts a proposition to become the companion to a beautiful and beguiling aristocrat. Their affair—formal and restrained by day, torrid and passionate by night—leads him to a place where nothing, not even his lover, is what it seems. This novella and three other tales explore the underbelly of sexual desire and together make up one of Paul Theroux's most compelling works yet.

Theroux storytelling never disappoints.
Revisado: 02-08-25
The halting style of narration detracted from my enjoyment. Theroux is a master storyteller, and his use of language is simply a joy to read.

Not Bad if You Like the Genre
Revisado: 12-13-24
Implausible plot twists, As bodice rippers go, the author went to heroic lengths to create a cast of strong women. As a murder mystery though, it left me feeling used. The narrator was amazing as each character had a unique, recognizable voice, quite a feat with such a large cast.

Not For This Dog Lover
Revisado: 08-07-23
At first I thought this was written for youngsters, but then the focus on Jerry's love life suggested otherwise. At any rate, if you're expecting a variation on A Dog's Purpose, you will be disappointed.

Excellent narration
Revisado: 03-31-23
I loved everything about this novel, and the narrator made it a pleasure to listen to. I did not expect a story about a general and war to contain so much humor at times it was laugh out loud funny.

Historia
On the edge of the Northern Atlantic lies a remote island. The islanders are an outwardly harmonious community—but all have their own secrets, some much darker than others. And when a strange disorder begins to infect them all, those secrets come to light. Ferry service fails and contact with the mainland is lost. Rumors begin to swirl as a temporary inconvenience grows into nightmarish ordeal. The fabric of the once tight-knit island is unnervingly torn apart—and whatever the cause, the question soon stops being how or why it happened, but who, if anyone, will survive.

I Guess You Had to Have Been There
Revisado: 04-15-22
I couldn't flog myself to finish it. Having lived through the 70s, I was familiar with the subject matter, sex, drugs, and the great writers of the day, Ken Kesey, Hunter S. Thompson, Larry McMurtry, etc. and thought it would be fun to relive it. But, it all seemed so irrelevant from this vantage point.

Historia
The Colorado River is an essential resource for a surprisingly large part of the United States, and every gallon that flows down it is owned or claimed by someone. David Owen traces all that water from the Colorado’s headwaters to its parched terminus, once a verdant wetland but now a million-acre desert. He takes listeners on an adventure downriver, along a labyrinth of waterways, reservoirs, power plants, farms, fracking sites, ghost towns, and RV parks, to the spot near the US-Mexico border where the river runs dry.

Second Listen Required
Revisado: 10-04-21
If the author had skipped the descriptions of the attire of the people he interviewed, and if the narator had used local pronunciations of location names (Salt on Sea is pronounced Sultin locally) I would have rated it a flawless five stars. Even if one isn't interested in Western water law, the history alone is worth the read. It's a good follow up to Stegner's Beyond the Hundredth Meridian and Reisner's Cadillac Desert. I'm starting over at the beginning to try to follow along via Google Earth.

Haunting
Revisado: 11-30-19
One should not avoid reading this book to spare the senses the graphic violence and almost unbearable suspense. And while the movie certainly did it justice as far as a movie can, the book delves into the psychological aspects of the trauma in a way no movie ever could.
