Historia
When retired FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does. That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Leaving Quantico for snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town—and there's no sign of Henderson. Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbors report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising—cutting off the town, with no way in or out . . .

Good enough story - Please Get A New Voice Actor
Revisado: 10-29-23
I love the ROL series. This story was good, but I found the frequent religious references distracting and not consistent with Agent Reynolds in past stories. While I tried to be kind about the Narrator, every time she unzipped her "parker" (rather than parka--a coat), it was so jarring that I came out of the story. The male voices all seem to have head colds; and as a native Southerner in States, I need to say, please, just stop.

Historia
It is the early spring of 2016 and Queen Elizabeth is at Windsor Castle in advance of her 90th birthday celebrations. But the preparations are interrupted when a guest is found dead in one of the Castle bedrooms. The scene suggests the young Russian pianist strangled himself, but a badly tied knot leads MI5 to suspect foul play was involved. The Queen leaves the investigation to the professionals—until their suspicions point them in the wrong direction. Unhappy at the mishandling of the case and concerned for her staff's morale, the monarch decides to take matters into her own hands.

Delightfully surprised!
Revisado: 07-24-23
I was hesitant to purchase this because I was expecting mostly fluff. But I am a big fan of the late Queen and of British history and ceremony. I personally enjoy the "inside look" at the court and courtiers almost more than the mystery, which is well done. Who knows how accurate the portrayal of Her Majesty the Queen, but it certainly "feels" that the author truly captured how HRH would think and act!

Good story but increasingly annoying heroine!
Revisado: 06-13-23
I've enjoyed this series from the beginning. Good prose, interesting historical information, tense mysteries. But for all her admirable traits, Bess Crawford seems more and more like a selfish busybody who torments her poor parents and friends by completely refusing to take their feelings into account in her rash decisions! I'm still enjoying the series (have started the next book), but am suppressing the wish to slap the protagonist!

Walt thinks he might find the answers he's looking for among the ruins of an old Native American boarding school—an institution designed to strip Native children of their heritage. He has been haunted by the image of the Fort Pratt Industrial Indian Training School ever since he first saw a faded postcard picturing a hundred boys in uniform, in front of a large, ominous building—a postcard that was given to him by Jimmy Lane, the father of Jeanie One Moon.

Historia
Retired to the English countryside, an 89-year-old man, rumored to be a once-famous detective, is more concerned with his beekeeping than with his fellow man. Into his life wanders Linus Steinman, nine years old and mute, who has escaped from Nazi Germany with his sole companion: an African gray parrot. What is the meaning of the mysterious strings of German numbers the bird spews out-a top-secret SS code? The keys to a series of Swiss bank accounts? Or do they hold a significance both more prosaic and far more sinister?

I typically love this series--the writing, characters, historical setting--and I love the narrator. I was enjoying it right up until the last chapter. But I am so disappointed, annoyed and a little angry at the ending (or really, the lack thereof) that I am returning the next book in the series before I even start it and quitting here. Sad.

Historia
Johannes Cabal, a necromancer of some little infamy, has come into possession of a vital clue that may lead him to his ultimate goal: a cure for death. The path is vague, however, and certainly treacherous as it takes him into strange territories that, quite literally, no one has ever seen before. The task is too dangerous to venture upon alone, so he must seek assistance - comrades for the coming travails.

Fantastic Imagining, Beautiful Prose, Ascerbic Wit
Revisado: 02-24-22
I listened to the Cabal books out of order, which did not negatively affect my delight in them; but I'm going to start from the beginning and listen again in order. I'm sure I will discover wonderful bits I missed the first go 'round; but if I'm lucky, I will find more laugh-out-loud moments and have time to recreate the fantastical imaginings in my own mind. I have so much admiration for Jonathan L. Howard's gift with prose, and I am awestruck by his spectacular creations. Plus, not too many books have made me laugh out loud--loudly!--as these have!

Laugh-out-loud funny, and smart, smart, smart!
Revisado: 02-18-22
I came in to this series at book 3 after being hooked by book 0.5. If you read/listened to book one and are on the fence about continuing, get this book! JLH hits his brilliant, erudite stride full on in this one. The storyline in this and subsequent books turned out to be secondary for me because I was so delighted by the prose, the droll wit, and the heart in the characters. JLH very subtly shows you the heart in what should be a repugnant character and makes you like and root for him. I laughed out loud so many times during this book and had to rewind a lot because the laughs are fast and slippery under the radar in throw-away comments, similes, observations, all sorts of non-obvious zingers that you may miss if your attention dozes for a moment. Brilliant! The narrator of Book 1 does a fine job, but Robin Sachs' rendering of Cabal in this book and other volumes in the series is so bloody well suited to the spirit of the character that it elevates the whole experience. I don't know if the skewering wit would make its way out of printed pages as well as it does here in large part due to Sachs' delivery. I seldom write reviews but had to tell how delighted I am following Johannes Cabal's escapades.
