Historia
For too many families, the postpartum period brings unexpected pain and devastation when depression enters the picture. The anticipated joy and pleasure of parenthood is replaced with feelings of fear, sadness, anger, confusion and resentment. When partners have the right information, they will not only gain a better understanding of the illness and its impact, they will also feel better themselves.

Not inclusive but otherwise very good
Revisado: 12-24-20
I'm a childbirth educator and birth doula based in NYC. I've been looking for a book like this for partners, and there seem to be too few. This one is excellent and has practical strategies for partners to support a beloved who is struggling with PPD, but I do wish it would be more inclusive both in using the terms wife and husband but also marriage. I also wish that it would speak to the fact that the moon birthing partner/dad can often also struggle with PPD and other PMADs. I can give it a soft recommendation with these caveats.

Historia
This is a no-holds-barred response to the liberal and conservative retreat from an assertive, activist, and socially transformative civil rights agenda of recent years - using a Black feminist lens and the issue of the impact of recent legislation, social policy, and welfare "reform" on Black women's - especially poor Black women's - control over their bodies' autonomy and their freedom to bear and raise children with respect and dignity in a society whose white mainstream is determined to demonize, even criminalize their lives.

Must-read for antiracism education
Revisado: 10-25-20
While some of this feels a bit outdated, overall this book is stellar and so important. I honestly was entirely oblivious to reproductive rights along with its racial ramifications and history aside from abortion. So glad a group of fellow birth workers decided to read it together as book club! A must read if you want to do antiracism work and/or are a birth worker.

Perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between people of color and white Americans struggling with race complexities, Oluo answers the questions listeners don't dare ask and explains the concepts that continue to elude everyday Americans.

Required reading for us white folks
Revisado: 08-11-20
This book is one of my top 3 recommendations for anyone wanting to understand why we white folks are, as a product of our culture, inherently racist (despite our protests that we are not). The author teaches how we can do better in loving our neighbors who are not like us as well as action steps to stop unintentionally causing harm and work toward change in our systemically racist systems. Highly recommend!

No-nonsense, straight to the point good advice
Revisado: 07-14-20
I'm a childbirth educator and birth doula in NYC and I'm a big fan of Dr. Worth's, having attend a birth with her and a number of continuing ed events with her as well.
This book is very good but isn't for everyone (guess that true of any book, but this seemed particularly true of this book to me). It's for someone who wants to be told all the no nonsense do's and don'ts in a very concise way with not much elaboration or nuance. What I really appreciate about this approach is that so many pregnant folks just don't have the bandwidth or inclination for lots of time spent on reading long and detailed books. They really do give you the essential need-to-knows, including my fave of pointing out the benefit of seeking pelvic physical therapy after birth, which I believe should just be standard of care (but isn't yet in the U.S.).
If you, on the other hand, don't like a "rules" kind of tone, or want a book that goes into the more reflective, inward transformative aspect of the journey into parenthood, this might not be the best book for you.

A must read for parents or parents to be!
Revisado: 01-28-20
This book is not only about science (though those parts are fascinating), but is a well-rounded book written by a thoughtful, involved father. One of my favorite things is that it focuses a lot on developing empathy in children. I also love that it demonstrates how important it is that the parental relationship be as solid and healthy as possible for the healthy brain and neurological development as well as emotional development of a child. The author has a great voice that is both friendly and uplifting. He works humor in regularly, which makes it an entertaining read in addition to being highly educational. as both a parent and childbirth educator, I have read many parenting books and this will be one of my top recommendations for my clients.

Like most first-time mothers, Angela Garbes was filled with questions when she became pregnant. What exactly is a placenta? How does a body go into labor? Why is breast best? One of the best books I've read on this topic!
Revisado: 02-14-19
I'm a veteran childbirth educator and cannot recommend this book highly enough. The topics are ones I think all expectant parents (or those trying to conceive) need to read. They are things I talk about a lot with my students, but are too little known in our society. Please read!

Historia
Millions of families are affected by eating disorders, which usually strike young women between the ages of fourteen and twenty. But current medical practice ties these families' hands when it comes to helping their children recover. Conventional medical wisdom dictates separating the patient from the family and insists that 'it's not about the food', even as a family watches a child waste away before their eyes.

Must-listen for anyone touched by anorexia
Revisado: 08-06-18
This book is a MUST read for anyone whose family member or friend is diagnosed with anorexia (or suspects it). My dear friend's daughter was just diagnosed and their closest family friends are all reading the book in order to better support, encourage, and sympathize with their deeply challenging journey on the road to recovery. The author includes not only memoir, but also sprinkles in interesting and helpful data, facts and history on the condition. Very well written, too. Cannot recommend highly enough. It will help families dealing with this feel less alone and will offer a helpful alternative to sending a child away from home for treatment--one that seems to be more effective.

Historia
Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.
