Historia
Something’s gone wrong in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. We can all feel it, but if we’re being honest, most of us don’t understand it. At the end of the day, we don’t have all the facts, and if you don’t know how something works, how do you fix it? A Return to Common Sense is a concise, no-nonsense, dare we say fun, guide to how America works and a roadmap to reclaiming a government of, by, and for the people.

Should be required reading for all Americans!
Revisado: 10-30-24
Leigh McGowan presents an excellent brief introduction to American civics, pointing out the fragility of our grand experiment in democracy. The forces tearing our nation apart are now at our doorstep, and she gives a point by point checklist of what really matters in our democracy, and the values which America should hold dear in order to preserve our system of government. This book is very well written and thought out. The author is a rockstar at explaining what is important!

How would Saturn’s rings look from a spaceship sailing just above them? If you were falling into a black hole, what’s the last thing you’d see before your spaghettification? What would it be like to visit the faraway places we currently experience only through high-powered telescopes and robotic emissaries? Faster-than-light travel may never be invented, but we can still take the scenic route through the universe with renowned astronomer and science communicator Philip Plait.

Phil's book is laid out like a travelogue, taking readers on journeys to far away and inaccessible vistas. He is the perfect tour guide, describing all of the sights and what they mean. In this way, he sneakily informs the reader about the newest discoveries in astronomy and planetary science. This book was a joy to read, and made the path to learning new things about the universe a fun and amazing journey. Highly recommended!

Being a retired physician myself, the author is spot on in describing the issues and problems with our current healthcare system. The United States is in the midst of a healthcare crisis due to the corporatization of the healthcare industry. I can tell you from the trenches that no one on the inside of healthcare is happy with the current system. As the author points out, public hospitals remain the last stop for the many desperate patients discarded by the for-profit healthcare system. This beautifully written book describes the complexities and the many failures of the current system. I wish more Americans were aware of the issues as so well described in this book. Hopefully, public pressure will drive politicians to reform our broken healthcare system!

Excellent advice!
Revisado: 02-08-24
I was greatly impressed with the quality of writing and the advice given in this wonderful book! I've been on a minimalist journey for over 10 years, working to simplify and curate my life so that there is more meaning and content in each moment of every day. The author provides excellent advice on how to curate our technological lives so that our interactions with digital media and with our smart phones become one of quality of content rather than quantity. Wonderfully readable, and filled with interesting anecdotes and historical vignettes, I highly recommend this book to anybody who regularly uses a smart phone or surfs the Internet. The author provides great advice and actions to reclaim your stolen time. Although I had already started implementing some of the concepts in this book on my own, the content and advice in this book sharpened my focus so I can do a much better job of enriching and curating my digital media use. This has allowed me to have much more time and productivity in the more important areas of my life.

Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.

Erin MacDonald gives a wonderful overview of the basic physics of relativity, space-time, time travel, and quantum entanglement. She intersperses her lectures with great examples from popular science fiction stories, movies, and TV shows. This lecture series is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the physics of outer space, science fiction, and the concept of time travel. Well done!

Good material but poor performance.
Revisado: 06-16-17
The material is a very good introduction to mindfulness and meditation. However, the presentation is marred by loud flute music of the same volume as the speaker's voice. This makes it very difficult to concentrate on the content of the material. The music would have been alright if it would've been about 1/4 of the volume, or better yet, if it had been left out entirely.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat during every chapter! Wonderfully narrated with a high degree of scientific accuracy, this is a story of the will to survive, and of self-sacrifice to help others. Engineers and scientists will love this book due to the accurate descriptions of how the protagonist prolongs his survival. It's also a very human story of what great lengths individuals, organizations, and whole countries will go to in order to help someone in desperate need. Highly recommended!
