Historia
Milly Theale is a young, beautiful, and fabulously wealthy American. When she arrives in London and meets the equally beautiful but impoverished Kate Croy, they form an intimate friendship. But nothing is as it seems: materialism, romance, self-delusion, and ultimately fatal illness insidiously contaminate the glamorous social whirl.

I liked the performance of James’ story and perfection of language.

Judi’s realism
Revisado: 10-21-24
Judi Dench never gets old. She’s fun, she’s honest, she is funny, she loves Shakespeare. How her photographic memory works is remarkable. I loved going back in time with her—-she remembered costumes, where she stood on the stage, who the director was, who the actors were, the music and on and on.
I never tired of the book, considering it was many hours long between two actors. Judi was brilliant.
Thank you for making this.I absolutely loved it.

Historia
Humanism is an expansive tradition of thought that places shared humanity, cultural vibrancy, and moral responsibility at the center of our lives. For centuries, this worldview has inspired people to make their choices by principles of freethinking, intellectual inquiry, fellow feeling, and optimism. In this sweeping new history, Sarah Bakewell, herself a lifelong humanist, illuminates the very personal, individual, and, well, human matter of humanism and takes listeners on a grand intellectual adventure.

What it means to be human
Revisado: 08-13-24
I liked the beauty of language with which the book was written.
I liked the liberal mindedness of humanity as represented by the author and how it made me want to respect the ethics and values of all human beings.
I like the way secularism does not compete with religion in the best sense rather, dogma is the enemy
of the human condition.
I like the abundant use of pro/con analyses.
I like how humanistic thinking makes room for all except for exceptionalism.
Thank you for a truly interesting inspiring and thoughtful book.

Coherent, interesting, novel
Revisado: 07-27-24
From the moment it began Cooper’s book captured my attention and the story remained captivating throughout.
I loved how the story of the Vanderbilts crossed several generations beginning in seventeen century until Gloria’s death. I liked how the characters were fleshed out—multi-dimensional and believable. I also liked how the theme of “the rich are different from the rest of us” resonated throughout the story. Cooper uses the method of comparing and contrasting; the reader also is reminded of how a currrent character might be similar to a previous one. The details are beautifully drawn; which serves to hold the reader’s interest throughout.
Cooper’s tone is both objective and subjective— especially as he considers his mother. For example he empathizes with his mother ad at the same time is able to step back from her. The book is rich in its beauty of language. I enjoyed listening to Cooper’s smooth voice. Thank you for a lovely listening experience.

Historia
If you want to understand the daily life and psychology of the late Middle Ages, Ronald Ecker’s classic translation of The Canterbury Tales provides one of the very best means of doing so. Within its audio is to be found a broad range of society - high and low, male and female, rich and poor - who express their innermost beliefs and extravagant fantasies in a series of stories they tell as they make their way to Canterbury Cathedral.

Historia
In 1785, when the great German poet Friedrich Schiller penned his immortal “Ode to Joy,” he crystallized the deepest hopes and dreams of the European Enlightenment for a new era of peace and freedom, a time when millions would be embraced as equals. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony then gave wing to Schiller’s words, but barely a century later these same words were claimed by Nazi propagandists and twisted by a barbarism so complete that it ruptured, as one philosopher put it, “the deep layer of solidarity among all who wear a human face.”
