Sure, it can teach you how to 'vlog', but not how to vlog well. Perfect if your goal is to be mediocre and immediately forgettable.

it's little more than a haphazard collection of familiar and generic advice lazily strung together. There is nothing of depth or substance here, no applicable systems or frameworks for how to most effectively apply the "learnings" presented.

The author’s reading of the introduction had me intrigued, impressed, laughing, and sold on the book.

Then the narration switched over to someone else entirely who came off like a cheap imitation, trying way too hard to match the inflections of the author.

I sort of wish the author didn’t read the intro, setting the bar so high, but I more so wish the author would have just narrated the entire book.

Couldn’t tolerate the copycat narrator for more than a few hours and decided to order a hardcopy version of the book instead.

The core idea here is that most people approach practice without adequate deliberate intent, and so understanding what and how to apply deliberate practice is key to maximizing growth.

It’s a deceptively simple concept full of potential, but the author spends very little time discussing how to actually apply deliberate practice.

Instead of breaking down deliberate practice into an applicable framework, he spends the vast majority of the book sharing anecdotes and referencing studies.

The examples are useful enough, but you can just as easily extract everything of true value from this book out of a quick google search or Chat GPT prompt asking for key takeaways.

No need to waste hours of your time listening to the author try to sell you on a simple concept that sells itself in a matter of minutes.

Near the end of the book, the author argues that too much effort is placed on knowledge rather than skill.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly where this book suffers. Too much superficial information and not enough practical application.

Given the title and synopsis, you’d think you would find guidelines or frameworks for effective mentoring strategies and techniques. All you get instead is a stranger’s auto biography.

Are you emotionally lethargic? This book is catered for newcomers to mindfulness, rather than anyone already capable of 'emotional agility.'

The author takes common, fundamental concepts familiar such in contemporary clinical psychology without acknowledging their greater origins in Buddhism, Stoicism, or any western philosophy. Instead, she references her own personal and professional experiences, while claiming basic elements of mindfulness or self-awareness as her own by coining terms such as "choice-points."

Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with summarizing concepts; the USMC for example has their own equivalent in what they define as "Operational Risk Management." In the context of this review, this distinction only serves to separate potential readers into two categories: Those who are interested in the deeper history and origins of mindfulness, versus those who are more or less seeking an introduction.

I'd recommend "The Science of Mindfulness," by Ronald Siegel for those who are more independent and self-reliant, and "Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work" by Chip & Dan Heath for application in a more specific context. Siegel's research-based path to well-being is research-based writing that doesn't constantly remind you how research-based it is.

This book is a great introduction for anyone who needs a "roadmap for real behavioral change," as the book's synopsis states. I would not recommend this for anyone already familiar with mindfulness, as you may find yourself becoming bored, impatient or underwhelmed. Nor would I recommend it to anyone irritated by frequent high-pitched vocal inflections.

The narrator breathes life into the longest and most enigmatic novel of Ishiguro's bibliography, through animated delivery and compelling character range.
