Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Very detailed account
Revisado: 01-10-25
Thorough discussion of Ft Sumter, for the 6 months prior until the siege that began the Civil War. Highly detailed, probably more so than many people are interested in. As a person interested in this time period, I enjoyed the book, after its slow beginning. The breathy narrator was overly dramatic.

Not Thoughtful, Not interesting
Revisado: 09-25-24
This book is mainly the author writing accounts of people’s life stories, their hardships and what they’d like to see improved. It is a book devoid of nuance and of new ideas. A genuinely thoughtful book should be based on actual data, and besides containing new ideas, it should find an interesting way of presenting them. Hearing the detailed life stories of a parade of people feels like an easy way to get a book published without taking the time to think.

Highly detailed, heavily scientific analysis. Very interesting mostly, but a little too detailed for me, even with my scientific curiosity. The narrator was monotonic.

Good story, not well written
Revisado: 09-06-24
Good story, easy read, interesting. Brings to life the Vietnam era, and graphically describes life in ‘Nam. Plot is a little obvious, the book is not particularly well written, story is formulaic, characters are often portrayed almost as caricatures, and yet - a pleasant read.

Interesting, thorough, delves into specifics worthy of a science class. Often perhaps too technical, it still so well written that it easily holds the listener’s interest

Historia
Confronted by the terrifying trends of the early twenty-first century – widening inequality, environmental destruction, and the immiseration of millions of workers around the world – many economists and business leaders still preach dogmas that lack evidence and create political catastrophe: Private markets are always more efficient than public ones; investment capital flows efficiently to necessary projects; massive inequality is the unavoidable side effect of economic growth; people are selfish and will only behave well with the right incentives.

Great Material, Way Too Long
Revisado: 02-16-24
I’m a big fan of Dr Greger, and have read or listened to all his previous books. I am also a person who likes details. This book, however, is over the top in detail, making it almost impossible to listen to. Buy this book if you are throughly interested in every aspect of the topic and have a lot of time to listen to it.

Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Incomprehensible
Revisado: 12-03-23
Zadie Smith is the worst narrator I’ve encountered, and I’ve listened to hundreds of audiobooks over decades. I had no idea which character was speaking at any given moment. I gave up after about 40% of the book, because I didn’t understand any aspect of the plot. I listened carefully, and tried very hard to follow the story, because the plot as described in reviews and on the website seems interesting. I was unable to discern any coherent story from this audiobook. Overall, it was a waste of money and time.
