Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Humorous, witty and absolutely enjoyable. By finding humor in his childhood experiences, it did not make light of his childhood but allowed us to see it from a different perspective.

Historia
In 1871, five young girls were sent by the Japanese government to the United States. Their mission: learn Western ways and return to help nurture a new generation of enlightened men to lead Japan. Raised in traditional samurai households during the turmoil of civil war, three of these unusual ambassadors - Sutematsu Yamakawa, Shige Nagai, and Ume Tsuda - grew up as typical American schoolgirls. Upon their arrival in San Francisco, they became celebrities.

Narrator is not familiar with pronunciation of Japanese names making it difficult for me to understand places and names.

Historia
The mission seems simple enough: Extract a pharmaceutical magnate from Russian soil. But nothing is as it appears to be. A desperate call thrusts Captain Tucker Wayne and his stalwart military dog, Kane, into a frantic race to rescue the brilliant-but-deluded Abram Bukolov from a cadre of skilled assassins. Hunted and betrayed at every turn, Tucker and Kane must discover the truth behind a horror out of the ancient past that can be weaponized to terrorize the modern world. As time rapidly runs out, the deep and intimate bond between dog and soldier will be tested to the extreme.

Great book.
Revisado: 05-15-14
I have read many James Rollins novels but especially liked this one because of two characters: Kane and Harper.

The audible version has elements that are not found in the written version. I liked the song written and sung by Carrie.

Historia
After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Canadian government uprooted Bin Okuma’s family and relatives from their homes on British Columbia’s west coast. Families were allowed to take only the possessions they could carry, and Bin, as a young boy, witnessed neighbors raiding his home before the transport boat even undocked. Removed from the one-hundred-mile “Protected Zone”, Japanese Canadians were sent to internment camps where for five years they lived in hardship in hastily erected shacks in the mountainous interior. More than 50 years later, after his wife’s sudden death, Bin travels across Canada....

a mass for the dead
Revisado: 08-09-12
This book reminds me of Joy Kogawa's book, Obasan, and the plight of the Japanese Canadian incarceration following Pearl Harbor.
Bin's quest and remembrances are sad but the remembered vignettes are not maudlin. Basil's antics (Bin's loyal companion dog) add humor and help to off-set the extreme seriousness of the subject which is likened to Beethoven's ponderous late quartets.
Great kudos to Frances Itani and her handling of the subject matter. As a Japanese American who was born in the US relocation camps, I find Ms. Itani's handling of the difficult subject matter different yet compelling and graceful.
