Historia
Never let real life get in the way of a good story, especially when a good story involves three witches, including a fairy godmother, and travelling to a faraway land to make sure that a servant girl doesn't marry a prince. It looks as though a happy ending may be averted before catastrophe strikes. But unfortunately, the forces of good are up against a godmother who has made Destiny an offer it can't refuse.

Delightful dialogue
Revisado: 07-01-23
Loved the story and the dialogue. The reader did an excellent job with voices for the various characters. Very, very clever and humorous, especially if you know your fairy tales.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

A keeper
Revisado: 02-04-23
This book will stay with me, and I may even re-read it, so I rarely reread any books I read. It is full of thoughtful things. Situations and relationships that make you think about yourself and your life and your choices. It is a “feel good” book. I particularly enjoyed the reader. She did a grand job. I can’t recommend this book highly enough 10 out of 10!

Historia
In her memoir All That Remains, internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist Dame Sue Black recounted her life lived eye to eye with the Grim Reaper. During the course of it, she offered a primer on the basics of identifying human remains, plenty of insights into the fascinating processes of death, and a sober, compassionate understanding of its inescapable presence in our existence. Now in this book, Black builds on that memoir, taking us on a guided tour of the human skeleton and explaining how each person's life history is revealed in their bones.

After reading, Sue Black’s first book, All That Remains (which I loved BTW), my only reservation was that she didn’t read it herself. This book she *does* read herself (hurrah!) and again it is so intriguing so fascinating so full of information I could hardly put it down. Bravo and best wishes to the author.

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Best I’ve read on the subject
Revisado: 11-26-22
I have enjoyed many books and authors that write about forensics, murder and death. I truly loved this one. This one takes a different angle focusing on individuals that work in the death and death management industry. It was fascinating to hear about their roles and how they cope, or don’t, after long exposure to pain, suffering and loss. I chose this book to learn more about dying and the ways we dispose of bodies. And I did learn a lot. Like the Kenyon company. Who knew there is a huge international company that can be brought in to coordinate every aspect imaginable following a disaster? Not me. But by the end I came away with a sincere appreciation for the “death angels” who help the rest of us. Lastly, that epilogue, wow.
One last bit of praise for this book. It is read by the author and she did a wonderful job.

Historia
Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller fans, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

Epilogue worth reading
Revisado: 10-30-22
Sue’s final thoughts on her own death wishes resonated with me. Her wishes for a non-medical ending match my own but my family is hard to convince. Only time will tell and I won’t be around to know.
My thoughts about the reader mirror those others have already voiced. I do wish the author had read it herself as it was so entirely her story.

For the first time, these tales have been brought together in a collection that shares the unforeseen and often humorous outcomes whilst revealing an insight into places that are a little off the tourist trail.

Loved it!!
Revisado: 12-09-19
Lindsey shares her insightful life lessons learned as she tells of her adventures traveling in her 20’s and 30’s and pivotal points in her life so far. That was my favorite part. The story itself flows smoothly with humor and grace. I laughed and cried and thought, “I want to be strong and adventurous and brave when I grow up, too” Only, it’s too late for that.
It was hard to turnoff! I listen to Audible on my short drive to and from work. I found myself grabbing headphones at home to finish each chapter. She is the perfect narrator for her book. Loved the sound of her voice and pace of delivery... smooth, calm, and kind.
It will be my honor and pleasure to meet Lindsey and her family in May 2020. I’m traveling to Scotland with her friend, Amy, mentioned the book.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Revisado: 11-14-19
It is pleasing to me that our monthly freebies are including diverse populations. I’ve enjoyed all of them so far. This story was raw and there is cursing. None of that bothered me.
Alaska is a place apart in more ways than one. Weaving native culture throughout the drama, both the good and the bad, really endeared this one to me.

The adult fairytale caught me up from the start. Neil is the only one to read his works! Loved the sweetness and magic of it and the ”feel good” ending. Big sigh at the ending that was just how a fairytale should end.
