Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He still does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar routines: the pub quiz, his favorite bench, his cat waiting for him at home. His days of adventure are over. Adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s job now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. Working in private security, every day is dangerous. She’s currently on a remote island protecting mega-bestselling author Rosie D’Antonio, until a dead body and a bag of money mean trouble in paradise. More characters than the book could handle
Revisado: 10-06-24
There were so many enjoyable things about the book, but the number of side stories and underdeveloped characters made it confusing and way less satisfactory. They weren't in stand alone vignettes or well woven into the story, but just stuck in. The book just didn't have the density to support the mystery and resolution.

Historia
For seventeen years, small-town public defender Andy Hughes has been underpaid to look after the poor, the addicted, and the unfortunate souls who constantly cycle through the courts, charged with petty crimes. Then, in the summer of 2020, he’s assigned to a grotesque murder case that brings national media focus to rural Patrick County, Virginia—Alicia Benson, the wife of a wealthy businessman, is murdered in her home. The accused killer, Damian Bullins, is a cunning felon with a long history of violence, and he confesses to the police.

Great characters
Revisado: 02-12-24
I really like Martin Clark - his characters are just a little extra, so you don't get cookie cutter procedurals but an entertaining, well written story. I can't say it was light, with a brutal murder at the heart of it, but it was a good listen with a satisfying conclusion.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Both preposterous and predictable
Revisado: 08-27-23
The story is based on the combination of a well worn trope and a preposterous coincidence. Somehow even then it feels predictable. I made it close to the end so I have to admit it kept me listening and the narration was good so I can't give it too bad of a rating but it's crazy and can't recommend

Sooo thin
Revisado: 06-11-23
I'm baffled at this book. Who would like it? I forced myself to finish but it had a very thin plot line with zero tension or mystery, a meaningless side-twist, almost indistinguishable characters except for the fact that the men and women were different kinds of awful, and cringey exposition. I do not recommend.

Wow, what a hidden gem!
Revisado: 04-09-23
I love Nordic noir and Tuominen puts a light, charming spin on what could be the darkest topic ever - the narrator discovers he has been poisoned and wants to solve the mystery and wrap up things before he goes. It just toes the line of absurd with such a deft touch that it delights instead of taking you out of the story. Unusual, well narrated, and clever. Highly recommend.

Fun twisty story
Revisado: 04-02-23
Nobody likes a bandwagon story, and being the 3rd Maid book I've read recently, I was a little wary. But I really liked it and recommend it for the kind of story it is. It could have used some tighter editing for plot holes and over-exposition and the narrator weirdly misread some words - I've never heard that happen so much. But I was along for the ride, not the bumps, and it was a fun ride.

Charming book
Revisado: 12-27-22
I typically love darker books, but I was charmed by this story. I am having trouble putting into words why I liked it so much, but it was a mix of realness and lightness that is just right.

Weak book expanded to fill too much time
Revisado: 09-18-22
This is a low quality book. If it has been touched by an editor, I would be surprised. Weird pacing, points that dart in and out, implausible story that drags on and on, "twist" given away by the title, the old diary trope used for boring exposition, etc. Don't waste your money on this.

Amateurish and hard to listen to
Revisado: 05-24-22
This light mystery storyline took me from the good hearted suspension of belief needed for an old fashioned radio drama into the chaos of unlikeable characters who behaved completely irrationally, setups that made no sense, every mystery trope Scooby-doo could have dreamed of, and cheap charicature accents - for some other production. SOMETHING has to go right for a show to be listenable and this didn't have it. I had downloaded for a long drive but by the penultimate episode chose silence.

Claudia is used to disregarding her fractious family’s model-minority expectations: she has no interest in finding either a conventional career or a nice Chinese boy. She’s also used to keeping secrets from them, such as that she prefers girls—and that she's just been stealth-recruited by Veracity, a referrals-only online-dating detective agency.

Revisado: 03-13-22
Different, charming, genre-referential in the best way. The mystery itself didn't keep me on the edge of my seat by the end of the book, but I loved the story, the characters and hope it won't be the last time we hear from the main character Claudia.
