Historia
Filled with sharply drawn, emotionally powerful senses, Walk Through Fire traces the hardships Sheila faced in her marriage and her professional life. Despite her skills as a violinist and music teacher, as well as her obvious entrepreneurial talent, she had to fight to overcome self-doubt and fears of failure. Sheila vividly details her struggles, including battling institutional racism, losing a child, suffering emotional abuse in her thirty-three-year marriage, and plunging into a deep depression with her divorce. And yet, out of that pain came renewed purpose and meaning.

She really did walk through fire
Revisado: 10-23-23
At first I did not like her voice but after a while I realized it was her pain coming through. That made me stick to the story to the bright and beautiful ending of that stage of her life and the beginning of what she deserved Bill. I wondered why she did not talk about her mother much in the story but she explained that she did not want to trigger any flashbacks in her mother. She suffered all this pain by herself basically. How can anyone be so cruel as that. But as they say “hurt people hurt people”. I wonder what got him to that point. I guess I will have to read his book next after I read Debra Lee’s book. I should hope that every young girl read this book before giving herself to anyone and realize that she does not need anyone’s validation.

New Orleans through the eyes of a nine year old BK/AK and a hope fore the future.
Revisado: 05-22-23
Once again Judith had me on the edge of my seat wondering what’s going to happen next. I really felt I was there watching them dance on Jackson Square, then swimming through the muddy waters of Katrina. Judith painted such a great word picture, I could smell and taste the wonderful food of New Orleans as well as the death and destruction after Katrina. I know it is not always realistic to have a happy ending but it was satisfying to know that the boy would have a happy life after all that he had been through. Two things that I did not feel were realistic were.the cover portrayal of Thelonious because his mother was a light skinned Afro American and his father was white and the fact that they had no TV. These were minor things that did not take away from the story. All and all it was a great read.

A Precocious Little Six Year-Old Driving His Parents Crazy
Revisado: 04-07-23
We were taken quickly through 3 months of a precocious little 6 year old’s life. Terry did more in his six years than most kids do in a lifetime. He learned more with Mr. McCree than I learned in twelve years of school. How many six year olds know about botany, biology, and other Sciences that Terry knew. If older people were not separated from the young and they would attend school too, what they could know? We could learn a lot from this book. I would give anything to have a Eunice, LuBelle and Mr. McCree in my children’s life. What a story. What a good start to life!

The daughter of one of New York's most influential families, niece of Theodore Roosevelt, and wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt witnessed some of the most remarkable decades in modern history, as America transitioned from the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, and the Depression to World War II and the Cold War. A champion of the downtrodden, Eleanor drew on her experience and used her role as First Lady to help those in need.

I really enjoyed Mrs. Roosevelt filling in some gaps of modern history for me. I also enjoyed hearing her side of history from the inside. I feel like I know the workings of a First Lady to some degree. I enjoyed learning about her childhood. Thank you Audible for bringing this to me because I don’t think I would have stuck to reading it all the way through.

Living black within the first 100 years after slavery was no piece of cake.
Revisado: 02-19-23
I like true stories. I particularly enjoyed this one because I had heard of this happening and had lived the life of a person of color during this era. I knew this to be true having lived it. The reader read it as if he really experienced these things too. I am very happy that this person was able to experience this life and was able to dispel some of the myths that some had taught about black people, black men in particular. Thanks for the experiment and the expose.

Historia
One of the first personal narratives written by an ex-slave, this is also one of the few written by a woman. Harriet Jacobs (1813-97) was enslaved, along with her family, in North Carolina under a ruthless master who sexually harassed her. After several failed escape attempts, and several years of hiding, she finally made her way North to freedom, where she was eventually reunited with her children. The book was published in 1861.

Dispelling the Mythsof slavery
Revisado: 02-13-23
This was a heartrending story of slavery. How I cringed at each twist and turn. How sad to see a people so at the mercy of people who had no mercy or heart. It is hurtful to know that our people went through so much devastation and it’s still going on. This slave girl had such a vocabulary and spoke and wrote so eloquently. I found it hard to believe that it was her own words though. There were some other things that I wondered about or that I missed. Why did she find Mr. Flint (master) so repulsive that she would not commit fornication with him but made exception to Mr. Sand, the father of her children? Did she do it out of spite or did she somehow love him? It was a good listen and description of a time to horrible to think about. The writer made it come to life.

At once a deeply personal memoir and an examination of a violent and stratified country, The House at Sugar Beach tells of tragedy, forgiveness, and transcendence with unflinching honesty and a survivor's gentle humor. And at its heart, it is a story of Helene Cooper's long voyage home.

Fascinating read
Revisado: 02-10-23
This was such a fascinating read! Or should I say ‘listen’. I think I would have missed some level of color were it not for the native speaker reading it. She made me feel as if I was there. She told the story from so many sides, I felt like I was one of the characters. I did however have to listen to it twice to understand the dialect. That was good too. Each time I listened, I gained a new thought. Thanks so much Helene Cooper for bringing this to us. This was especially important for Black History Month. A definite must read or listen. No, you must listen to get the fullness of it.

UP FROM SLAVERY
Revisado: 02-07-23
This really helped me to appreciate how far the black man has come in such a short time. I really enjoyed the way it was presented. It kept me glued to the reading for the entire 7 hours. I am really appreciative of the lessons learned. Lessons of hard word and persistence. I also appreciated the lesson of not being upset about what had gone on before. Also to appreciate what was learned during slavery. Not to let anyone off the hook for the wrongs committed but what’s to be gained from retaliating. I am sure a lot was accomplished from proceeding in the ‘let’s get on with life’ frame of mind. There were a lot of things brought out that I did not know happened, ie, some people did not really believe that they were free, so had to go test the waters, so to speak. I really appreciate the message of doing something good or better than someone else and a life spent making things better for someone else. The comparison of the English servant to the Negro slave. All in all this was a good and worthwhile read. This is Black History Month.

Such a real like story. It really put me in the picture. I felt like I as one of the characters. Just like life, you win some and you lose some. I wish Phoebe could have made it out. Just like many mothers, you are sacrificed for the greater good.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.
