Historia
Paul O'Rourke is a Manhattan dentist with a thriving practice leading a quiet, routine-driven life. But behind the smiles and the nice apartment, he's a man made of contradictions, and his biggest fear is that he may never truly come to understand anybody, including himself. Then someone begins to impersonate Paul online, and he watches in horror as a website, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account are created in his name.

Slow Building, But Worth Sticking With It
Revisado: 03-22-15
If you could sum up To Rise Again at a Decent Hour in three words, what would they be?
Uneven, but worthwhile.
What was one of the most memorable moments of To Rise Again at a Decent Hour?
The story comes alive in the second half of the book.
What does Campbell Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I thought he was competent, consistent, and restrained. He didn't try to show up the words he was reading by "performing."
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. The protagonist is curmudgeonly, and not immediately likable.

Historia
Young Ajax Penumbra has not arrived in San Francisco looking for free love or a glimpse of the technological future. He is seeking a book: the single surviving copy of the Techne Tycheon, a mysterious volume that has brought and lost great fortune for anyone who has owned it. The last record of the book locates it in the San Francisco of more than a century earlier, and on that scant bit of evidence, Penumbra's university has dispatched him west to acquire it for their library.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

The Range of Human Experience Brilliantly Rendered
Revisado: 03-21-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would, without hesitation. Joe Barrett does an exceptional job bringing Irving's captivating, intricate novel to life. I laughed, cried, cringed, and was deeply moved.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Owen is the star of the show, but I identify with his best friend John; I'm a plodder, well-meaning, but all too often more than a little thick headed. All the characters were well wrought and multi-dimensional.
Which character – as performed by Joe Barrett – was your favorite?
He did a great job with Owen, who is a character that is so over the top in so many ways that it would be easy to overdo him, and render him as a caricature. But Barrett didn't reduce him one bit; he made him human, and moving, cringe-inducing voice and all.
If you could take any character from A Prayer for Owen Meany out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Owen, Hester, and Harriet Wheelright would all make for lively company.
