Historia
They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A classical pianist from London, a British would-be architect turned soldier, a Harlem-born ragtime genius in the US Army, and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past. Their story, as told by goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and passion, and reveals that, though war is a formidable force, it's no match for the transcendent power of love.

Loved the characters and how relatable they made the immigrant story. My family has been in the US for hundreds of years so I really learned from the characters’ experiences of being immigrants newly arrived in the US

Historia
In 1926, Henry Beston spent two weeks in a two-room cottage on the sand dunes of Cape Cod. He had not intended to stay longer, but, as he later wrote, "I lingered on, and as the year lengthened into autumn, the beauty and mystery of this earth and outer sea so possessed and held me that I could not go."

A love poem to The Cape
Revisado: 07-02-24
I spent many many summers on the Cape. I could see, hear, smell and feel all the animals, weather, stars, seasons etc that Beston describes. The book is like a love letter to the Cape. Also enjoyed learning about the Surfmen and lighthouses. Loved the beautiful word smithing, the narration, and the ocean sounds between chapters.

Historia
Writing in cascading vignettes, Selby Wynn Schwartz spins an invigorating tale of women whose narratives converge and splinter as they forge queer identities and claim the right to their own lives. A luminous meditation on creativity, education, and identity, After Sappho announces a writer as ingenious as the trailblazers of our past.

Cringy narration
Revisado: 01-03-24
the narration is really bizarre. I’m going to just buy the book and read it. Absolute butchering of French, Italian, Greek names in a strange sing songy monotone. Comes off as a camp parody of an American trying to sound sophisticated. Maybe this was the intent? But it feels like a mockery of the women in the story trying to find their true selves. Was this the intent of the book? First time I’ve been so distracted by the narrator that I couldn’t focus on the story.

Historia
Titan is the first full-length biography based on unrestricted access to Rockefeller’s exceptionally rich trove of papers. A landmark publication full of startling revelations, the book indelibly alters our image of this most enigmatic capitalist. Born the son of a flamboyant, bigamous snake-oil salesman and a pious, straitlaced mother, Rockefeller rose from rustic origins to become the world’s richest man by creating America’s most powerful and feared monopoly, Standard Oil. Branded "the Octopus" by legions of muckrakers, the trust refined and marketed nearly 90 percent of the oil produced in America.

Really enjoyed this book, even tho it was long. Tells the story of American industrial growth and social change at the same time as the story of the Rockefeller family.
