Great action with a huge variety of types of people
Revisado: 02-05-25
This opens like a similar extraction based plot but soon encounters a large variety of groups of peoples incarcerated in an ultra max security prison on another planet. However, as more of the story unfolds, it involves complicates subplots. Also, many, if not all, of the characters are not who the reader thinks they are. There are heartless people of whom one might assume to be soft-hearted, whether in general or with respect to another character. The converse is also true. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel, even though the cliffhanger could have been better written and still serve as a cliffhanger.
About the narrator, he’s very good at his job, but like many men, when he speaks with a female voice he makes them sound like a 30 year old barfly. It’s grates on my ears most when he’s supposed to be speaking for a very young woman. However, his work at speaking English the way a person from another culture is very good.

Historia
The planet LV-363 teems with exotic life, including a plant growing in the shadows of its deep rifts. The plant’s flower yields a valuable narcotic, and people are forced by the cartels to harvest it. When a Yautja (Predator) ship arrives for a hunting ritual, the Predators seed the rifts with Xenomorph eggs. The aliens emerge and the result is bizarre and deadly hybrids, with humans trapped between the Predators and their prey. These deadly Xenomorph hybrids—some of which possess the ability to fly—swarm out of control and may prove more than the Yautja or the humans can defeat.

I never thought the Predator series could be interesting until now
Revisado: 01-08-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this book recording and now my wish list is significantly larger. I had no idea that the predators had a culture, etc., but when I thought about it, I remember I’d believed they were alien big game hunters.
There were what I believe may have been some innovations to this world; if so, I appreciated it. I also loved how the aliens once again evolved into a new hybrid and created a fourth semi intelligent species,
I’m so glad I used a credit on this. Can’t wait until I get more of them!

Incredible vision
Revisado: 12-12-24
I’m not usually too much a fan of sci-fi set in the far distant future because often it begins to lean into the category of fantasy. But I knew this author wasn’t usually even close to traditional fantasy as in witches or unicorns, etc. (I’m not completely against fantasy if it can be grounded in science.)
Added to the fact that this is a long audiobook, I decided that this book could be a winner. Or, if my hunch didn’t play out, something I’d regret buying. I’m happy to say that my hunch was correct. Not only is this novel based in science, it deserves every word and plot turn involved.
I love the fact that the future of humanity is presented at the beginning and the end of the story. I’m also completely impressed with the characters and their cultures. Further, the engineering developed over the time and even the inevitable language shift over millennia is highly satisfying. It’s foolish to believe that our languages would survive fairly intact over thousands of years when very few of us are fluent in Old English.
This novel, in my opinion, is a masterpiece.

Historia
Evelyn Waugh's most celebrated work is a memory drama about the intense entanglement of the narrator, Charles Ryder, with a great Anglo-Catholic family. Written during World War II, the story mourns the passing of the aristocratic world Waugh knew in his youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities; in so doing it also provides a profound study of the conflict between the demands of religion and the desires of the flesh.

A true masterpiece
Revisado: 12-06-24
During the first part of the story, I believed I was hearing a classic tragedy. The protagonist’s closest friend who had a fatal flaw. But as the events unfolded, I realized that this was a love story. It wasn’t just the family, or even their home; it was a paean to a way of life that, during the narrator’s life and in his home country, would never return. But there are so many other very significant elements here that the book cannot really be encapsulated into even several different viewpoints. This is especially true because they entwine around each other so often and in such various ways that I believe it can only be seen as a magnificent entirety.
It might be difficult for people who cannot fathom the way people in that place or time to grasp the way the world changed over the 20th century. Most of the main characters were probably meant to have been born in the years spanning 1901 - 1925. While it’s true that the internet has dramatically changed our culture, people of those generations also found their world changing greatly.
The book is beautiful and beautifully written. I hope those who read or listen to it can understand that this novel is indeed a tragedy. Even acknowledging all of the injustices of that time, the turmoil of people whose lives were so dramatically changed should not be seen with judgmental eyes. We who are living through the events of today will, in the future, be judged by the generations who follow us. None of us are perfect.
With this in mind, we should be able to understand the difficulties people in the UK faced when the events of this book took place. If not, we will be traumatized when future generations cannot understand the difficulties people experience today.

Historia
When Rab was a baby, his mother made a decision which would change his life. She feared he would be sent to work in the hellish mines of Mercury, to eke out his life until he was worn out, all in the name of maintaining the defense of the Solar System. But when her desperate attempt to flee with her 2 year old failed, she took a desperate step to save him. She cut off his hand. Decades later, Rab has been spared the physical hardships he can no longer endure, and is now based on the Mask, the all-encompassing structure which hides the Solar System from alien eyes.

Typical Baxter convoluted but brilliant novel
Revisado: 11-22-24
These books can be difficult to slog through at times, but this one is easier listening. In the future, earth believes it’s threatened by small creatures made from, out of (?) energy. Two groups of people who hopes to continue humanity against an onslaught are brought together a thousand years later - a group who tried to protect the solar system via “masks” designed to make themselves undetectable to outsiders and a generation ship returning from a colonized planet who just wanted to check on the other group.
A young man and woman - one from each moiety (obviously) meet and decide to explore the solar system together. They encounter an eccentric pilot and the young man’s mother, who he hates because she tried to save his life as a baby.
The four of them, plus the policeman who “rescued” the boy end up discovering a huge conspiracy designed to empower a certain elite. But, in a twist I’ve noticed in another Baxter novel, one of the group has an epiphany that explains the “invasion” on a much larger scale.

Just be warned - ends with a cliffhanger!
Revisado: 11-10-24
First, I want to praise the narrator. His female “voices” were pretty good! I could believe that some characters, one in particular were young women. I didn’t for one minute think that they sounded like a 56- year old barfly who smokes more than 1 pack of cigarettes a day . Thank you! He also mimicked a British accent based on that of John Cleese, in addition to the accents of people who have come to the U.S. from Russia not too long ago.
This is a pretty good near-future sci-fi story. There is a lot of military action in the book. I like near-future military sci-fi books.
The characters are well-fleshed out. They all bring their baggage to the table and pull out a useful or interesting item for all to see. (Or, hear, in this circumstance.)
Over all, I enjoyed listening to this book and will probably add the next book to my library in the not-too-distant future.

Devastated by the deaths of her parents and disillusioned with life, Caroline Daynes is in America trying to connect with their memory. Travelling to her mother's hometown of Williamsfield in Pennsylvania, she is caught in a snowstorm and forced to stop at The Egress hotel - somewhere she'd planned to visit as her parents honeymooned there. From the moment she sets foot inside the lobby and meets the surly receptionist, she realizes this is a hotel like no other. Charming and unique, it seems lost in time with a whole cast of compelling characters sheltering behind closed doors.

The narrator’s speech ruined the story for me
Revisado: 10-10-24
I might have rated this book more highly if the problems with the narrator didn’t affect me the way fingernails scraping a chalkboard does. I’ve enjoyed every book written by Struthers so far, until I listened to this one.
First, she spoke at near super sonic speed. Okay, I’m exaggerating. But this combined with her childish voice made her sound nervous. Maybe she should have been nervous, because the way she mangled the way the American character’s speech was atrocious. Nobody I know of, and I’ve spoken to Americans from all over this country, pronounces the word “bone” like “boo-own.” At times I couldn’t even understand what they were supposed to be saying, it was that bad.
I’ve heard many British narrators do a great job when speaking for American characters - why did they have to choose this one? Honestly, I wouldn’t have chosen her just for the way her childish voice sounded as if she were opening a door to see a bogeyman. That’s two strikes, but they were so egregious I count her out

Great story, with every detail of the genre included.
Revisado: 08-23-24
First, I must write about the narration, she mispronounced a few words - the most egregious was when she said “dwadlled” instead of “dawdled” not once, but TWICE!!!!
Other than that, the narrator did a good job.
There was great insight into the synthetic human mind who can feel emotions and the reactions from both genetic humans, other synthetics and AIs to her manner and even her existence. It also demonstrated the emotional links between bio humans and synthetics. Further, there is a character that straddles the line of both - a human within an electronic shell.
This take on the Alien story illustrated the possibilities of using the aliens as a bio weapon. It is also the first book that fully explores the way the aliens incorporate the DNA of their hosts. I am so impressed with the author’s ability to create various alien species and then alter them into hybrid aliens.
There were various “main characters”. One of the co-matriarchs was possibly my favorite of all. In this novel, the concept of family illustrates the way we used to live - with marriages, adoptions, etc. I wasn’t thrilled with the fact that 2 of the marriages were between 2 women each. Don’t we have enough “Woke” examples already? I mean, really - look at the statistics. Even with the current fad of blended sexualities, the percentage of true lesbian partnerships in the human species isn’t that large to account for having two gay couples in nearly every new book that comes out. I went through a period of time in the 1970s-80’s when it was also a fad, and the number of women who stayed involved with other weren’t that many, even among women who were “PC”. My parents had friends who were gay, and I can only think of 4 people who were. This includes a man and woman who were married. My parents had lots of friends of all kinds, most of them were involved in the medical profession. Such a talented writer shouldn’t feel the necessity to cater to this fad in order to sell books. I know Stephen King did, which is a shame. That said, I appreciate the racial and ethnic blend of all of the characters. I really hope this author writes a few more books within the Alien story line!

Revisado: 08-11-24
It’s so refreshing to find another well-written medieval mystery series! The historical details are accurate as far as I can tell; it’s not easy to find a writer who understands that “uppers” contract the irises, often to the point to where the eyes look black from the enlarged pupils. This is accuracy I find rare among many writers - some of them quite famous. I hope to begin the next book in the series right now!

I’m addicted. It’s the only explanation for why I’ve already bought 2 books that come after this one. Oh, I plan to buy them all!
The author once again depicts accurately the lives of villagers living during the reign of Edward III. In fact, I just looked up two extinct breeds of hunting dogs that are part of this story and the one earlier. You learn many things new every day, it seems; and what a pleasant way to learn them!
I’m keeping this review short, because I’m more than ready to begin the next book in this series!
All I can say is, listen to them! Bye
