Beautifully Understated Emotions
Revisado: 05-22-24
Very affecting return of Eilis Lacey to Ireland after a rupture of her marriage. A little too much emphasis on her beau but still extremely poignant overall.

Sparkling Story and Writing
Revisado: 03-24-23
JoJo Moyes keeps getting better and better! I thought her trilogy was superb but was skeptical that she could outdo it . I was wrong. Someone else’s shoes is great literature — where both sparkling story and sublime prose elevate it to food for the soul.

Historia
On a chilly early morning walk on the wooded outskirts of Berlin, Emil Grimm finds the body of his neighbor, a fellow Stasi officer named Lothar, with a gunshot wound to the temple and a pistol in his right hand. Despite appearances, Emil suspects murder. A few months earlier he would have known just what to do, but now, as East Germany disintegrates, being a Stasi colonel is more of a liability than an asset. More troubling still is that Emil and Lothar were involved in a final clandestine mission, one that has clearly turned deadly.

Winter Work Exposes the Stasi’s Last Stand
Revisado: 09-25-22
Winter Work depicts the shifting sands of the Stasi’s final days as the Russians and American spies vie for influence. The narration by the author is superb. The ending is the weak link.

Historia
Tumors, injuries, ruptured vascular malformations—there is almost no such thing as a non-urgent brain surgery when it comes to kids. For a pediatric neurosurgeon working in the medical minefield of the brain—in which a single millimeter in every direction governs something that makes us essentially human—every day presents the challenge, and the opportunity, to give a new lease on life to a child for whom nothing is yet fully determined and all possibilities still exist.

In this searing memoir, Congressman Jamie Raskin tells the story of the forty-five days at the start of 2021 that permanently changed his life—and his family’s—as he confronted the painful loss of his son to suicide, lived through the violent insurrection in our nation’s Capitol, and led the impeachment effort to hold President Trump accountable for inciting the political violence.

A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.

At age 19, Natasha Trethewey had her world turned upside down when her former stepfather shot and killed her mother. Grieving and still new to adulthood, she confronted the twin pulls of life and death in the aftermath of unimaginable trauma and now explores the way this experience lastingly shaped the artist she became. With penetrating insight and a searing voice that moves from the wrenching to the elegiac, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Trethewey explores this profound experience of pain, loss, and grief.

A riveting memoir about her mother who was killed by her husband. Highly recommended if you want to hear from a preeminent talent. I normally shy away from books narrated by the author but this one was a monumental exception. I can't wait to read more by Natasha Trethewey!

Historia
I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter - for whom this book was written - from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers.

As Brilliant as Ian McEwan
Revisado: 09-01-20
I was blown away by this memoir. Each chapter is devoted to a near death experience told in a fractured way with language so brilliant that my jaw dropped. O'Farrell dissects every moment, holding time in abeyance for dramatic effect. These were the features that reminded me of my hands-down favorite writer Ian McEwan. O'Farrell is as superb a writer. I am looking forward to reading her entire oeuvre.

Historia
As a general, Ulysses S. Grant is routinely described in glowing terms: the man who turned the tide of the Civil War, who accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox; the man who had the stomach to see the war through to final victory. But his presidency is another matter. The most common word used to characterize it is "scandal."
