Historia
When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Realistic med student life
Revisado: 10-15-24
Interesting, a bit twisted story of life as a first year med student. The aspects of the rigors of med school are right on target. Add a twist of drug use among students, a little student-teacher fraternizing and even a little murder- and you’ve got an entertaining plot!

Historia
Alma Cruz, the celebrated writer at the heart of The Cemetery of Untold Stories, doesn’t want to end up like her friend, a novelist who fought so long and hard to finish a book that it threatened her sanity. So when Alma inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic, her homeland, she has the beautiful idea of turning it into a place to bury her untold stories—literally. She creates a graveyard for the manuscript drafts and revisions, and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her.

Confusing
Revisado: 08-28-24
I had a difficult time keeping the characters straight. Difficult to remember which were “real” and which were part of Alma’s stories. The timelines were very confusing, but to be fair, they might not have been as confusing in print as they were in audio version.

Historia
Years before the name Alex Murdaugh was splashed across every major media outlet in America, local South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney had an instinct that something wasn’t right in the Lowcountry. The powerful Murdaugh dynasty had dominated rural South Carolina for generations. No one dared to cross them.

That’s one tough investigative reporter!
Revisado: 08-09-24
Audiobook
I became interested in the downfall of the Murdaugh dynasty a few years ago after watching a news show devoted to the case. This book, written by the main journalist responsible for the persistent investigation of their case, is absolutely fascinating. Because Mandy Matney and her partner doggedly pursued the truth and refused the be intimidated or shut down by the good ol’ boy system of the South, authorities finally did their job to put a stop to Alex Murdaugh and his entitled family.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

Riveting
Revisado: 08-09-24
Riveting story of deception at every turn. Gwen is an elderly woman with dementia whose daughter, Connie, is caring for her in this season of life. Suddenly Paul enters and begins to infiltrate their lives in the most invasive manner. I could literally feel my blood boil as his maneuvers became more and more diabolical. Enter a new twist…just who is Connie and what is her past. And Meredith?
So many turns that I couldn’t decide which character to hate!
I’ve read One other John Marrs book (The One). So happy I tried another.

Historia
Trish O’Kane is an accidental ornithologist. In her nearly two decades writing about justice as an investigative journalist, she'd never paid attention to nature. But then Hurricane Katrina destroyed her New Orleans home, sending her into an emotional tailspin. Enter a scrappy cast of feathered characters—first a cardinal, urban parrots, and sparrows, then a catbird, owls, a bittern, and a woodcock—that cheered her up and showed her a new path. Inspired, O'Kane moved to Madison, Wisconsin, to pursue an environmental studies PhD.

Surprisingly good memoir
Revisado: 07-26-24
Memoir of a Katrina-survivor, teacher, economist, bird loving woman who found her way through adversity and loss through a love of birds. The more she learned about the birds the more she saw the need to fight for the protection of their natural habitat. An activist was born!
It surprised me that I stuck with this, but I’m glad I did, as I actually enjoyed it. I have tremendous respect for this woman.

Fascinating novel about a proposed (fictitious) theory of who actually shot JFK . Albeit fiction, this is a fabulous novel involving espionage, power, corruption and adventure to the hilt. I’m looking forward to more in the Luke Daniela series.

A bit creepy
Revisado: 07-14-24
Margo, sent to live with her grandmother as a young child, is informed of the death of her parents, whom she has not seen since the day ahead left. She’s now the owner of the family business, Gallows Hill winery. But there’s a lot of seriously creepy stuff attached to the property, including a family curse. It’s seriously more creepy than I expected, but could not stop listening. I liked the characters and the ending, again a bit creepy, but at least was satisfying.

Excellent character development and plot twists
Revisado: 05-21-24
Set in Cornwall, England in the 1920-30’s and in present day. Eleanor and Anthony experienced love at first sight and created an idyllic life on a lovely lake property by the sea. War took Anthony away and, like many men who returned home from The Great War, he was never the same. Living with the secret of Anthony’s “shell shock”, Eleanor promises to protect the secret at all costs.
Baby Theo disappears and the unsolved mystery of that tragic disappearance lies quiet for 60 years.
Present day detective, Sadie Sparrow, escaping the shame of a case gone bad, retreats to Cornwall to seek solace in her grandfather. She stumbles upon the old lake house and is drawn to the mystery of missing Baby Theo.
The two worlds intersect as Sadie begins to slowly unravel the mystery.
Excellent development of characters and wonderful plot twists.

Historia
In 1932 Eleanor Roosevelt entered the claustrophobic, duty-bound existence of the first lady with dread. By that time she had put her deep disappointment in her marriage behind her and developed an independent life - now threatened by the public role she would be forced to play. A lifeline came to her in the form of a feisty campaign reporter for the Associated Press: Lorena Hickok. Over the next 30 years, until Eleanor's death, the two women carried on an extraordinary relationship.

Enlightening
Revisado: 05-11-24
I have tremendous respect for the woman, politician and influencer that Eleanor Franklin was. This story was so enlightening. I learned so much about her relationship with FDR and the role she played in influencing policy, helping move our country out of the depression and maneuver through WW2.
I was intrigued by Eleanor’s relationship with Hick over the years. I appreciated the manner in which the author handled it. It seemed realistic (based on actual letters from both women), and not sensational. Well done.
