Another home run from Naomi Novik

I found Naomi Novik through her marvellous Temeraire series and was pleased to find she had tried her hand at the well-trodden Magic School genre. But she does something new and fresh with it, and every minute is enjoyable. Novik builds an intriguing world - I am so glad this is a series because I want to know ALL about it and I have so many unanswered questions - and our heroine is smart, cynical, and wrong in all the right ways from moment one. (Those who liked Sarah Rees Brennan’s In Other Lands will definitely want to give A Deadly Education a go.) Going with El as she puzzled through problems, yells at everyone, and tries assiduously to survive school, is a great ride, and Anisha Dadia’s reading brings her to life. I can’t wait for book 2; till then, I am listening to A Deadly Education all over again.

An odd and delightful Chrestomanci story

While it doesn't reach the heights of The Live sof Christopher Chant, this remains one of the best Chrestomanci books. The interwoven characters, perspectives and stories are engaging for a child to follow, and this book is one of DWJ's best for providing rich characters with distinctive, flawed, but interesting perspectives on the world around them.

Fine Christie; iffy voice acting

The mystery has a really i ntriguing setup, and an interesting rollout. It's not one of her most engrossing, but it's certainly worth the listen. On the other hand, Fraser's voice acting in this one is... fine. The characters are less distinctive than usual, Poirot himself is lesss distinctive, and overall, I would have been happier reading the book than listening to it.

A strong, adventurous, psychological Christie

This Christie effectively blends the exciting plot and setting of some of her more adventure-oriented mysteries with Poirot's signature psychological insight as the key to solving the murder. David Suchet is as always my favourite narrator - his characterisation is vivid, and his Poirot is of course definitive. A good one.

This is one of my favourite Christies. It's intriguing, character-driven, and one of Poirot's finest in terms of reasoning based on the psychology of the individual. It's a bit of a slow burn, not super action-packed, but utterly engrossing.

A really exciting, intriguing, and well-narrated Christie. A bit more of an adventure story than her usual domestic, psychological murder plots, but a fun ride, with an engaging cast and a satisfying conclusion. Recommended!

Any additional comments?

I'm awful at guessing the whodunnit in murder mysteries, so it was a huge surprise that I managed in this case. Once the full cast of characters is laid out before us, it's evident pretty quickly what is really going on. The "how" is ingenious, but the "who" and "why" were a bit of a letdown.

What didn’t you like about David Suchet’s performance?

Suchet is the ultimate Poirot -- and for most of the book, his rendition is flawless. However, suddenly in the last couple of chapters his performance changes. Instead of the voice of the fastidious little Belgian we know and love, we get a sort of vaguely Frenchified accent with the same pitch and timbre as Hastings. Not sure what happened there, but it really spoiled my enjoyment of the thing.
