Historia
The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

Individual Chapters
Revisado: 02-03-25
It was so long and involved it took me almost a year to finish it because I kept picking it up and putting it down. I will never forget the first chapter and I really liked chapter 59. There were so many nuggets of truth and observation that I had to go to the end. Also, so many places mentioned a special place in my heart! Thanks for the book.

Historia
Before the nightmares began, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But the dreams—invasive images of blood and brutality—torture her, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It’s a small act of independence, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband, her brother-in-law, and sister each fight to reassert their control, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that’s become sacred to her.

Not a stand out for me, it was good.
Revisado: 10-15-24
I liked the depth of illness explained.
I did not like the dismissive and heavily judged position women in this story held.
Narration was a bit painful to listen to. I wanted to see what kind of book receives a Nobel prize.

Good story, too long

Hi, there were far too many chapters discussing the color of Luke’s eyes and the curl of his lips could have been shortened. Overall story was very good.

Historia
Josie Bianci was killed years ago on a train during a terrorist attack. Gone forever. It’s what her sister, Kit, an ER doctor in Santa Cruz, has always believed. Yet all it takes is a few heart-wrenching seconds to upend Kit’s world. Live coverage of a club fire in Auckland has captured the image of a woman stumbling through the smoke and debris. Her resemblance to Josie is unbelievable. And unmistakable. With it comes a flood of emotions - grief, loss, and anger - that Kit finally has a chance to put to rest: by finding the sister who’s been living a lie.

Everything works out in the end
Revisado: 07-24-24
I was reading this for Book Club, the story was all right, but I felt it lacked depth for all the drama that was packed into it. I wish I liked it more, mostly I just wanted to finish it.
The narration felt pained, full of effort and a bit flat.

The land of Peru is one that, for many, seems far away and distant. Even for those living relatively nearby geographically, Peru can seem just out of reach. After all, Peru is situated high in the Andes on the western coast of South America. Those who dare to live at this high of an elevation have learned to live on their own terms.

I appreciate hearing the history. I could have done without the play-by-play on each battle, and given more time to the pre-Inca history and more information about Peru less information about the transfer of power from year to year. Was Peru the entire landmass and broken down into Bolivia, Argentina and Chile? That’s what I concluded from this rendering of history? Were there originally no geographic lines of countries until later? And did Europe install those geographic lines during colonization; similar to the division of the? It was a short book, that led me to more questions that I will continue to investigate.
The narration was all right, some of the high notes and low notes at the end of each word could be reduced.
Thank you!

Disillusionment/Idealism uncovered
Revisado: 05-06-24
I loved the weaving of so many complex issues of generations, bringing light to stories that need to be told. I did not and do not like the reality of future generation continuing to make decisions that send children into a world that does not have a goal to value all lives and experiences.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Perfectly woven
Revisado: 12-14-23
The weaving of the stories was complete, like a perfectly knit sweater. The historical reference made it more so! It was complex, and evenly told showing the internal struggles of our implicit and explicit biases.with regard to differences throughout the eras the story covered. I never lost interest or felt the author stray from her point.
I felt the reading of the story got confusing because the narrator’s reading of the different character voices sounded the same, and I needed to rewind to figure out who was speaking. Also, Jess’s voice did not seem to fit the character. This did not detract from the story!!

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Exhaustion of arrogance
Revisado: 10-23-23
I enjoyed the book, and was hoping for more of a thread, as one of the reviews suggested. The detached and obtuse tone in the voices of all of the narrators, left me with the feeling they were exhausted just recounting the history. Which in retrospect may have been the point. The attitude of arrogance surrounding the business of finance/money by all parties not wanting to appear affected by power. Taking into account, the tragedy and loneliness in each character’s life added to the weight of the novel.

Historia
In her harrowing, defiant, and unforgettable memoir, Sarah Ramey recounts the decade-long saga of how a seemingly minor illness in her senior year of college turned into a prolonged and elusive condition that destroyed her health but that doctors couldn't diagnose or treat. Worse, as they failed to cure her, they hinted that her devastating symptoms were psychological. The Lady's Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness is a memoir with a mission: to help the millions of (mostly) women who suffer from unnamed or misunderstood conditions.

Don’t stop listening
Revisado: 08-04-21
You will want to, as the endless stories of disappointing doctors visits drones on and on…driving home the feeling so many of us share regarding the medical establishment.
Yet, each story illustrates the rabbit holes each doctor sends patients down because the establishment has not unified and drawn obvious connections to so many ailments plaguing our society and ignoring accessible, preventative care options. Thank you, Sarah, for your time, research, and commitment to not giving up on yourself or any of us.
An Thank you, Dr. Ramey for really seeing your daughter.
