Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

One of the best audio books I've listened to. The right amount of suspense. I cheered Beth on during the highs and lows.

Historia
After getting canned from the Seattle PD, brilliant, wisecracking Thomas Prescott follows his sister Lacy to Philadelphia, where she swims on the Drexel University team. While Thomas’s slapstick antics mask a keen analytic mind, it’s his nose for trouble that leads him again and again into dicey situations. The ex–homicide detective is not long in Philly before getting caught up in two high-powered criminal cases. Thomas stumbles into a crime scene amid the Occupy Philadelphia protests. Activist Brooke Wexley has been strangled within sight of city hall.

Historia
Women warriors planned and led slave revolts on slave ships during the Middle Passage. They fought their enslavers throughout the Americas, and then they were erased from history. Wake tells the story of Dr. Rebecca Hall, a historian, granddaughter of slaves, and a woman haunted by the legacy of slavery. The accepted history of slave revolts has always said that enslaved women were not involved, but Rebecca decides to look deeper.

The dramatics drowned the voices so it was difficult to hear. Powerful story. Just wish it had been easier to listen to.

Historia
In 1782, a ghost ship ran aground in a secluded cove in Cornwall. To this day, no one knows what became of the Aurora’s crew or the shadowy woman rumored to be onboard. In 2021, when Kyle inherits his aunt’s historic house in Cornwall, all Nicole anticipates is a few idyllic days in a beautiful setting—until she discovers that not only is the house connected to the centuries-old legend of the Aurora and the woman at the center of the mystery, but it also hides its own dark past.

Top Notch Historical Mystery
Revisado: 11-07-21
Irina Shapiro is one of my favorite suthors. I love how she weaves a present-day story into one of the past. Her female characters are strong, but very human showing a range of emotions. She is able to transport me into the lives of people who lived during fascinating periods of history to tell their story.

10 years is a relatively short period for a relationship. I hope they make it a lifetime. Her language was offensive along with her left-wing hysterics.

I Didn't See It Coming
Revisado: 03-20-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a historical fiction mystery. The ending made it all worth while. It makes you wonder if what we read today in history books is based on fact or fiction - or maybe a mystery.

Revisado: 03-20-21
I'm a big fan of Ms. Shapiro. Of her books that I've read, this one did not appeal to me as much as her other books. It is historical fiction going from present day to 1605. There is a twist that makes the story a bit more interesting. I felt that the audio could have been improved by using a different reader. I found her voice a bit annoying, but that is purely personal preference.

Unfiltered. Unapologetic. Older, but not wiser, Lancaster goes back to basics in this hilarious essay collection about everything from taking community policing classes to accidentally getting high with her waiter after a fancy dinner. These are the tales she'd tell if she met you in a bar... if she weren't too lazy to put on pants and go to a bar. Offering advice ranging from how to remain happily married to a man who refuses to blow his damn nose already to not creating An Incident at the cheese counter during an attempt at Whole30, she's you, only louder.
