Historia
We hear stories all the time about the supernatural—miraculous healings, unexplained sightings, near-death experiences—but how do we know what is real? Are rumors of spiritual beings, healings, and prophetic dreams dangerous deceptions, or is there something important for us to explore? Join investigative journalist and former atheist Lee Strobel as he examines the evidence and considers how we should think about the unseen world—and the God who made and rules over it.

So much hope, so uplifting! Strobel at his finest!
Revisado: 03-31-25
I've got all of Lee Strobel's Audio books. I love them all. However, this one is a bit extra-special for those of us who are solidified Christians. I'm a life-long Christian, so while I absolutely love his other books, it's stuff I already know and believe. This one takes you behind the scenes by addressing so many encounters with the Supernatural, whether it be miracles, angels, NDE's (near death experiences), and ... demons. My entire life I've been drawn to the supernatural, but never want to get close enough to touch it. Some aspects are very frightening, and Lee's approach to hell, demons, damnation, I can only say is comforting in a way that only Lee knows how to make happen. Please don't get me wrong - this book is not based on those things, he has a couple of chapters on them, but the subject matter can be pretty intense. The book in its entirety is incredibly uplifting, will make you feel like you just spent time chatting with Jesus and reassures you that you've definitely made the right choice in becoming a Christian. While all of this is wonderful for the seasoned Christian, it is by no means limited - I believe that anyone seeking Christ who has a strong interest in the supernatural would definitely benefit from this book, as well.
Lastly, also in true Lee style, he provides plenty of scriptural support as well as documented conversations with biblical scholars. It flows beautifully, his narration - as always - is engaging and flawless. I'd give 7 stars if I could, being God's perfect number. Lee Strobel is a gift and a blessing to the world.

In 2011, three successful and highly educated women fell head over heels for the brilliant and charming Ethan Schuman. Unbeknownst to the others, each exchanged countless messages with Ethan, staying up late into the evenings to deepen their connections with this fascinating man. His detailed excuses about broken webcams and complicated international calling plans seemed believable, as did last minute trip cancellations. After all, why would he lie? Ethan wasn't after money—he never convinced his marks to shell out thousands of dollars for some imagined crisis.

This NEEDED to be told!!!
Revisado: 06-20-24
Not only is this a wild, twisty-turn story that is impossible to put down, it's an extremely important story to tell, and to be read. Too many have become victimized by evil, sociopathic frauds, for a plethora of reasons. This book blew my mind, and the fact that they outed the antagonist just warms the cockles of my justice-loving heart. This person has NOT shown remorse for the damage caused, but has only attempted to justify their despicable actions. As a professional in a field that makes them extremely dangerous, I'd encourage everyone - especially women - to put this at the top of their library. This person is very easy to find on the internet right now, I doubt that'll be the case before long. This book is solid proof that even highly intelligent people can be rotten human beings, right to the core.

Years before the name Alex Murdaugh was splashed across every major media outlet in America, local South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney had an instinct that something wasn’t right in the Lowcountry. The powerful Murdaugh dynasty had dominated rural South Carolina for generations. No one dared to cross them.

Ouch.
Revisado: 11-27-23
It really pains to me write this review, but I have to agree with the others that this book was not necessarily about the Murdaugh mess as it was more about Mandy's career and the people that have slighted her. She did a great job on the podcast, I only wish someone would've helped her to focus on the subject matter and let the other stuff go. We've all been treated unfairly and maligned at some point, but I found myself saying too many times "geez, put on your big girl pants and stop whining!" Again, I take no joy in writing this review, but it is what it is.

A frustrated, unhappy wife. Her much younger, attentive lover. A husband who degrades and ignores her. The stage is set for a love-triangle murder that shatters family illusions and lays bare a quiet family community's seedy secret world of sex, sin, and swinging. Better Off Dead, the latest true crime book from New York Times best-selling author Michael Fleeman, strips away the pleasant veneer of the Silver Lakes neighborhood in California's high desert to tell a shocking story about a headline-grabbing crime.

Dirtbags galore!!!
Revisado: 12-27-22
Good grief, there's a plethora of low-character people in this story who clearly think very highly of themselves, it truly made for a fascinating listen! Obviously, the wife (Sabrina) and the supposedly Christian boyfriend (Jonathan) are murderous dirtbags - they killed the husband. But once you start hearing about the husband and the other players involved, this just sounds like it could've been scripted from a Sodom and Gomorrah storyline. Listen, just because the victim was murdered does NOT give him a free pass from being a dirtbag in life - he was passing his wife around like a bag of popcorn, and fooling around on her constantly - all the while being furious with her for finding a boyfriend. The friend who turned them in - another dirtbag who was the feminine half of a swinger couple that loved to strip naked at parties made the murder victim sound like a blameless saint! I realize this is a true story and my frank honesty might be too "sensitive or hurtful" to some... but there is no hero or heroine here to like and root for. Except for possibly the jury, the Prosecutor and the Judge. lol I definitely recommend it - it's very well written, entertaining and the narrator's breathy reading of Sabrina had me in knots! Seriously, 5 stars all around. (PS. I don't find the murder funny at all, Sabrina and Jonathan are exactly where they deserve to be, being a dirtbag does not justify being murdered.)

Historia
On June 5, 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

Ms Smart is breathtakingly brave and courageous
Revisado: 07-21-21
Overall - 5 stars for perfect. The storytelling from the writing to the narration is flawless. Elizabeth's story is captivating and heartbreaking. What happened to this young lady was horrific, yet she has set an example to the rest of the world of how strength and faith can set a person free from the bonds of rape, captivity and abuse. She should be considered a hero to the victims of such crimes.
Performance - 5 stars for perfect. Elizabeth has a lovely voice. Her grammatical inflection keeps the story very interesting, easy to listen to, easy to follow. I have a very hard time following a story if the narration is lousy, Elizabeth delivered an on-point performance.
Story - 5 stars for perfect. I cannot think of a thing that should change. Also, I was struck by her humor... her ability to use dry sarcasm in describing difficult moments was very telling of her resiliency. It wasn't "ha ha" humor, yet it made me feel like there was hope in the moment. Humor is a human necessity, a gift from God in getting us through life's difficult moments, and it was also good to know that she was able to maintain her humor and sense of irony. I believe her parents should be acknowledged in how Elizabeth handled herself during her captivity, and how she handled it afterward. This book is an enormous testament to their outstanding parenting skills.
I was very thankful to see that she does not place Mitchell and Barzee in a mental box of fear in her mind. Rather, she is dismissive of them, understanding that they're evil, not worthy of her time - yet she remains humble. Elizabeth is a beacon of hope in today's sad and bitter world.

After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Chilling and frustrating, yet an excellent listen
Revisado: 07-15-21
The storyline is mortifying. How this "human" was able to keep people under her control while she tortured and humiliated them is mindboggling. What she did to those within her orbit should have earned her the death penalty. I don't know if that's even an option in Washington, but if it were, she definitely earned her place on death row.
The narration was top notch. I'm a huge Kevin Pierce fan, and Karen Peakes is running a very close second. The entire book kept me riveted.
This evil, nasty waste of skin is due to be released in June, 2022, I am very afraid for those who will find themselves in her path without realizing who she is and her evil, vicious nature. Kudos to her daughters for making the world aware of this monster.
IMHO, this book is a serious contender, deserving of the 2021 Best Non-fiction Audiobook Award. Good job Gregg, thank you ladies, rot in hell Shelly.

Eerie gothic tale, fun listen!
Revisado: 06-23-20
Rarely do I find a book that I try to carve out time for. I usually listen when I have time - I don't usually "miss" them. This one, I did. As with most fiction, there are some little holes here and there, but in order to truly enjoy any fiction, one must decide that none of that matters as long as it doesn't harm the story.
Ms. Webb spins a fabulous, atmospheric tale. Rich characters, interesting twists and turns. It's easy reading, flows very well.
Xi Sands is one of my favorite narrators. I am not sure why she received some negative reviews, because her performance, IMHO, always keeps me focused. You could have the most interesting, captivating book, but if you have a lousy narrator, forget it. Xi breathes life into to story. I'll listen to anything she narrates.
Ms. Webb and Ms. Sands make a great team for excellent story telling. I highly recommend this book for the gothic horror fan.

Revisado: 08-26-19
I read this book when I was in my early 20's... then all the fuss about the Lifetime movie brought it back to my attention. Skip the movie, it's awful. This book, however, is amazing. Although our heroine is not sweet and demure (rather, she is cynical, sharp and carries a lot of pain), you do find yourself caring about her and rooting for her. Not to mention, Candace Thaxton gives great life to all of the characters! I easily tend to drift away if the narrator isn't grabbing my attention, and this never happened to me in this book. If you're a VC Andrews fan, or a fan of this genre, I would highly recommend this book. But as I said, steer clear of the movie, it's truly awful!

Have you ever wished you could live in an earlier, more romantic era? Ladies, welcome to the 19th century, where there's arsenic in your face cream, a pot of cold pee sits under your bed, and all of your underwear is crotchless. (Why? Shush, dear. A lady doesn't question.) Unmentionable is your hilarious, scandalously honest (yet never crass) guide to the secrets of Victorian womanhood.

I've been an Audible monthly member since 2000. That's almost 18 years of a book subscription. There are a very small handful that I return to, and THIS book has just shot to the top of that list. The trick to sidesplitting humor is cleverly finding and communicating certain truths. Our dear writer must've been in knots throughout the writing of this book. Her caustic wit expresses itself in such a way that illustrates absurdity PERFECTLY! The performer has proven herself to be the ideal match to this writer. Her inflections are spot on, and had me cracking up on a regular basis. If you've EVER thought that the 19th century was a romantic, dreamy era to live in, this will change your mind. I have no doubt that I've missed parts, so I'll be going back to make sure I catch everything. Again... and again... and again... Buy this book, you will not regret it! Oh, and the accompanying .pdf does not disappoint, either! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
