Historia
When Juan Cabrillo fails to capture the leader of Mexico’s most dangerous drug cartel and loses an Oregon crew member in the process, he’s determined to get revenge. Little does he know that the explosion he just narrowly escaped was merely the latest flash of violence from a machine of war that has existed for decades, dating from the bloodiest episode in Armenia’s history.

Best Inspector Rutledge so far
Revisado: 02-12-22
This is absolutely the best book in this series so far. The story is full of mystery, intrigue, plot twists, annoying characters, tragedy, humor, and chase scenes. The possibility of a relationship between Ian and Kate also takes a couple of interesting turns. This story would make a fantastic movie.

Another great book from P.D. James
Revisado: 08-11-18
I've listened to about five of the P.D. James books and this one may be the best so far for character development. Penelope Dellaporta does a masterful job reading/performing the book. The plot is a mind-bender for sure. Even Dalgliesh gets confused in this one.

Historia
The Dupayne, a small private museum in London devoted to the interwar years 1919 - 1939, is in turmoil. As its trustees argue over whether it should be closed, one of them is brutally and mysteriously murdered. Yet even as Commander Dalgliesh and his team proceed with their investigation, a second corpse is discovered. Someone in the Dupayne is prepared to kill and kill again. Still more sinister, the murders appear to echo the notorious crimes of the past featured in one of the museum’s galleries: the Murder Room.

One of the best writers I've come across
Revisado: 07-23-18
I love to listen to great writers. Having an excellent reader like Charles Keating just adds to the experience. However, I will listen to nearly any book I download multiple times when the writing is so good that I want to go back and listen to character development, plot twists, amazing descriptions of scenes or drama, etc. My favorite writer has long been Charles Dickens -- and I've found P.D. James to be on that level. Her command of the language enables her to express what she is describing in such vivid and evocative ways. It's not just a book, it's an experience worth revisiting.

Not quite Cussler
Revisado: 04-18-18
First, the story itself is action packed and made me want to finish it to find out what happened. The reader speaks so fast that I lost some of what he said -- and his voices for some characters are too artificial to be enjoyable. Clive Cussler knows how to make books that have great plots, too, but Cussler knows that gratuitous sex is voyeuristic, unnecessary, and turns off some readers - like me - who would like to hear the story without having to be dragged down an alley of verbal porn. I'll try one more book, but Mr. du Brul, please grow up as an author. You could sell good books without disgusting your customers. You can trust the imaginations of your readers with suggestive hints and probably make everyone happy.

Historia
Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers. One day, he's tracked down by an uncle he barely knows - a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday.

Disappointment of olympic proportions
Revisado: 10-17-15
What a total disaster! I've looked forward to Rick Riordan's return to mythological adventures and bought this as a pre-release. I downloaded it immediately and listened until I could stand it no longer. The story is easy to follow but lacks the character development found among Percy Jackson and his allies. There are few friends of Magnus who are characters like Anabeth, Grover, and the other pals at Camp Half-Blood. Oh yea, there is an Anabeth and a man whose last name is Chase -- just try helping your young reader understand that these are not the same people from Percy's stories. I finally finished the story and was so underwhelmed by the ending that I felt my entire effort had been a waste of time. The reader is yet another novice reader who has both no rhythm and agonizingly frequent inappropriate inflections. You get the sense that the reader is making his first pass through the pages and opts for dramatic inflections no matter how poorly his reading sounds. He does have some talent with different voices, but his high-pitched tones are distracting. After all the success of Rick Riordan, why doesn't he insist on the best readers (such as Katherine Kellgren)? I love the stories from mythology -- but this one may doom any sequels. Alas, a series was lost for want of a skillful reader.

Historia
The weaver Silas Marner is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in an unnamed city in Northern England in the early 19th century. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds, leaves the city in disgrace, and accumulates a small fortune in another town…only to lose it to theft. But he soon adopts an orphan child quite by accident. The exchange of one treasure for another is the heart of the story.

Great classic read well
Revisado: 09-20-15
This is one of those books I was "supposed" to have read in High School. Well, now (about 45 years later) I've finally at least listened to it. What a delightful surprise. Carlton Griffin does an exceptional job reading the book. The voices are distinctive and nothing distracts from the plot. The book is, well, a classic -- and for all the right reasons. Mary Ann Evans (aka George Eliot) was typical of 19th century Victorian literature. There is a lot of prose, but the descriptions of people and the environment rival those of Dickens (my favorite).

Revisado: 06-17-15
David McCullough is just so thorough and believable. Further, his reading of his own book gives us a real sense of what he was trying to say. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a reader is stressing things the way the author intended, but with McCullough, you know you're hearing it right.

Dickens and his Mutual Friends
Revisado: 05-06-15
I love Dickens and have read or listened to all of his novels. Through them all, I have gained a lot of new friends (characters) whom I reflect upon as friends. In Our Mutual Friend, written later in Dicken's life, we see the real genius of the author. Not only do we see his more mature social conscience, but he does a masterful job in correcting the low view of Jews that some accused him of having back in his early days with Oliver Twist. I love this audio version of this book, and cannot imagine finding a better reader.
