Historia
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Hilarious
Revisado: 07-14-23
The performance is fantastic with the narrator really making the rivalry between the butler and the neighbor hilarious. The writing has that humorous tone of, “welp, that was really weird…and we’re walking.”

Not what I expected...but in a good way
Revisado: 01-03-21
I approached this audiobook expecting it to be the standard mystery alternate history. But it turned out to be so much more than just "what event did the author change to make this circumstance." It has the right amount of political behind the scenes.
For the most part, we get to know the characters through their dialogue rather than interior monologues, which makes reading the audiobook a lot like watching a movie.

Historia
Diaspar is Earth's last city - surrounded by deserts, on a world where the oceans have long since dried up. It is a domed, isolated, technological marvel, run by the Central Computer. Diaspar has conquered death. People are called forth; they live for a thousand years and then are recalled, to be born thousands of years later, over and over again. No child has been born for at least 10 million years. Until Alvin....

Okay, but meh
Revisado: 09-08-20
I didn't enjoy The City and the Stars very much. That's not to say I hated it, it just was very meh. It just kind of was, but it wasn't the greatest book and some of the narrators were okay. I don't recommend the book unless you are reading through Arthur C. Clarke's bibliography.
This book is apparently a rewrite of his first novel and he wrote it before he wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey, so perhaps he was still a developing writer. The reason I wasn't that into it is that it doesn't really have any interesting characters. The main character is just bland and doesn't realistically struggle with not fitting in, he just wants out of Diaspar. Even the Jester, who you would think would be an interesting character, is pretty bland.
Some of the narrators were really good, but others ripped me out of my listening experience and ruined it for me.

Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares.

Amazing Combination of Performances and Storylines
Revisado: 09-08-20
This book is told in a narrative of a series of interviews detailing the events that took place at Fantasticland after a hurricane hits. There are creepy moments, there are depressing moments, and there are terrifying moments.
The thing that I like most about the book is that it introduces questions and then adds information without completely answering the question. Then, the next interview will gives us a little more of an answer, but still not completely answer it, but it introduces another question. Who is Brock Hockney? Who are the Freaks? The author does this and it adds so much intense suspense that I just had to keep reading.
And the performances by Luke Daniels and Angela Dawe are absolutely phenomenal. When the narrators narrate two chapters in a row, you can barely tell that they are the same person. At one moment, you have a southern maintenance man, then, you have a guy from Chile, both with authentic-sounding accents. Or in the case of Angela Dawe, a socially awkward 20-something vs. a confident leader.
The performances by the narrators and the excellent narrative and plot devices that the author uses work incredibly well together. I definitely recommend it, but I think that is probably a given since I gave it a 5/5 stars for everything.

When Murph Cooper rocks up to his new school, he can't help but feel a bit out of his depth. And it's not because he's worried about where to sit, and making friends, and fitting in, or not knowing where the loos are. It's because his mum has enrolled him at a school for superheroes by mistake. And unlike his fellow students Murph has no special abilities whatsoever. But just because you don't have superpowers, it doesn't mean you can't save the day....

Simple, good humor
Revisado: 06-21-20
I really enjoyed the humor in this book. It has an almost Neil Gaiman feel to both the writing and performance, it has the innocent humor of childhood just starting to grow up. Bad things happen, but it’s okay because most people react in a funny way.

Historia
"I’m James Taylor and I’m a professional autobiographer", says the celebrated folk singer at the start of this tender audio memoir. Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

Meh story, interesting performance
Revisado: 06-17-20
The story summarized most of his life, but the times he actually talks in depth about something is interesting because it is followed by a short version or full version of the song.
Essentially, the in depth parts are the inspiration behind the song that’s about to play. That is an interesting performance decision, but there aren’t many songs, which means most of it is almost vague summarizing, unfortunately.
But if you have an hour and a half to spend listening to this and enjoy knowing the inspiration for musician’s songs, I recommend it.
