Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

I tried to listen in bits but I could never discern who was the narrative subject and was completely lost. Might try again when I can listen for prolonged periods

I don’t think I’ll ever tire of listening to this series, might even listen to it all again if I need a fix until the next book.

Couldn’t put it down
Revisado: 11-17-17
I started listening to this one even when not in my car, I liked it so much. An original storyline built on various ideas done before in sci-fi that is really engaging and multilayered in its complexity of ideas . I really had good visuals as if watching a movie (but it would be difficult to produce as a film without botching it). Narration is great. Hope to see more from this author.

De Waal reviews the rise and fall of the mechanistic view of animals and opens our minds to the idea that animal minds are far more intricate and complex than we have assumed. De Waal's landmark work will convince you to rethink everything you thought you knew about animal - and human - intelligence.

dull, really dull
Revisado: 07-06-16
I listened to 8 of 12 chapters hoping it would turn around, but then I couldn't take it any longer. I was looking forward to a fascinating narrative of the observed intelligence of a variety of animals, but this was mostly a dry rambling dissertation/critique of other ethologists and psychologists with occasional descriptions of experiments demonstrating intelligence or our failure to design such experiments properly. If you want to hear 10 hours of 'cognition' pronounced three times a minute, then this text is for you. I am usually not bothered by narrators quirks, but this one's ill fitting denture only added to the annoying narrative.

They destroy plant diseases. They break down toxins. They plough the earth. They transform forests. They’ve survived two mass extinctions, including the one that wiped out the dinosaur. Not bad for a creature that’s deaf, blind, and spineless. Who knew that earthworms were one of our planet’s most important caretakers? Or that Charles Darwin devoted his last years to studying their remarkable achievements?

A few tidbits of new science or history related to earthworms that we haven't heard before on Nova, but unless you're an organic gardener, I found this as dull as you might expect.

From the beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author comes an intimate look at the driving forces in one man’s life. With Augusten's unique and singular observations and his own unabashed way of detailing both the horrific and the humorous, Lust and Wonder is a hilariously frank audiobook memoir that his legions of fans have been waiting for. His story began in Running with Scissors, endured through Dry, and continues with this memoir, the capstone to the life of Augusten Burroughs.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-30-16
I really liked Dry so was excited to try another Burrows. This one was tedious and made me want to shout "if you're so unhappy in this relationship just get out already!" I think there's only so much in one person's life that can be made into memoir. That said, I do like Burrows writing and will likely listen to another!

Historia
A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted. For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure". She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. But there was a price. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth.

Not as funny or interesting as I had hoped based on reviews, bit it was genuine and somewhat insightful. Not a great listen, but not a bad one either.

At the request (well, it wasn't really a request) of his employers, Augusten lands in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey Jr. are immediately dashed by grim reality of fluorescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. When Augusten is forced to examine himself, he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan life - and live it sober. Dry is the story of love, loss, and Starbucks as a Higher Power

wow! (so glad I bought it)
Revisado: 05-02-15
I thought I'd listen to this but was kind of dreading it. But what a well written and read tale of true life. I wanted to listen because I know I'm drinking more than is good for me and it's hard to moderate, but haven't yet hit bottom or even had glaring problems (not many anyway). I like to listen to these stories as they give me hope that if this person can survive and rebound then I'm ok and not headed for hell. But this was a great life tale in it's own right. I think even people who aren't affected by a substance abuse problem or associated with someone close would still enjoy the story. It's not a crazy story, and it's not written in shocking cliffhangers - but it had me yearning to get in the car and drive just to listen.

Terrible storyline with one dimensional over stereotyped characters. I thought I'd get eventually be drawn in but no such luck, just glad when it ended. Sound editing not well done. Male voice is booming while female is a barely audible whisper.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Larson writes history that reads like fiction
Revisado: 03-22-15
But it's not fiction. I wasn't sure I'd be interested in the Lusitania, but but I enjoyed Larson's other books so much, I thought "he might be able to do this one". I wasn't disappointed. From the logs of the U boat captain, British naval and government records, and diaries and statements of passengers, Larson weaves a narrative that reads as easily as good fiction. I put him in the category of Doris Kearns Goodman and Laura Hillenbrand.
