Historia
Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray. Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade.

Tedious & Lackluster Editing
Revisado: 01-30-25
After four books I think I am done with this series. The main point is that I can't stand dialogue anymore in this book. Were all the books like this? Every sentence of dialogue seems to end in "said" and it drives me nuts. Replied, moaned, griped, exalted, cheered, screamed, yelled, whispered, intoned, etc etc etc. Get a thesaurus.
For the rest of it, the complexity of the story and world, rather than feeling rich and compelling, feels tedious. I understand what Sanderson's trying to do with the characters as well, but Kaladin and Dalinar just end up feeling like whinging boors and I'm kind of over it. Part of that is the writing, but part of it is also that I've grown weary of Kramer's narration. It's just not for me.
This is a DNF for me, I find I'm no longer interested in the story.

Quite Good
Revisado: 12-17-24
A rare series where each installment moves the story decisively forward and doesn’t languish in hours of filler. Like the rest, book 7 is integral to the overarching plot, and just as engaging and enchanting as its predecessors, don’t miss it.
This series also stands out as having not only a great author, but a great editor, or at least the writing and lack of poorly structured prose makes me believe there’s a good editor on board somewhere. This genre seems to be lacking in good editors.

Historia
Outside Los Angeles, a driver pulls up to find a young woman sitting on a large black box. She offers him $200,000 cash to transport her and that box across the country, to Washington, DC. But there are rules: He cannot look inside the box. He cannot ask questions. He cannot tell anyone. They must leave immediately. He must leave all trackable devices behind. As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.

Despite the Controversy, 10/10 Credit
Revisado: 10-08-24
I know this book has been controversial, but IMHO this is the best book Pargin has written out of the two that I have read. Another wild ride full of poignant takes and astronomically implausible (or are they?) people. 10/10 recommend.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

Chaotic, Interesting, Dated
Revisado: 09-18-24
The story is a ride — chaotic and random while still maintaining a coherent plot. It’s quippy, fun, strange and even poignant at times. It vibes like a Palahniuk novel, though more meandering and likely could have been two distinctly separate books, but kudos for not splitting the story into sequels. The only thing I didn’t like are the casual use of dated slurs that have gone out of fashion since 2007; the F word (the one directed at friends of Dorothy), the N word and the R word are jarring in this era of not referring to people by rancid epithets, so take that for what its worth. I’ll buy another book by Pargin (“David Wong”) that was written a decade or so later in hopes that the word choices have evolved.

A Cut Above
Revisado: 08-28-24
This series has remained entertaining without dragging or making me want to yell “move the plot forward” after 6 books and that’s fairly impressive in the genre.

All the world's a stage...even when you're teleported to a new world. Struggling actress Cara O'Sullivan was walking down the street of Galway one moment, and the next, she was in an ancient tomb in a faraway world. Alone in the dark with her cell phone as her last tenuous connection to home, Cara sings her favorite song. To her astonishment, her song casts a spell of light into the world...and from the depths, something hears her. Challenged by a ghostly knight, a tragic necromancer, and hordes of undead, can a young woman who does not believe in heroes become one herself?

Slow to Start, Good Story
Revisado: 06-20-24
Might not be my entire cup of tea, I want to yell at the MC to “snap out of it!” a few times, but overall i think the characters were well written and the story was good, a fresh break from many other in this genre.

Has Potential
Revisado: 05-22-24
Good enough for book 1, has potential to really get into the details of what this kind of technology might be like if it ever exists. There are some questionable, somewhat unbelievable plot points around what is “allowed” by the VR technology, maybe they’ll be answered in later books. There’s a lot of word repetition like “The sweat on my face was blurring my vision so i wiped the sweat out of my eyes.” type stuff… just kind of un-reviewed and un-thoughtful prose.

Julie's only hope for rescue lies in the hands of her estranged father, Dr. Finn Maddern, a renowned mycologist.

Written for Hollywood
Revisado: 05-10-24
For better or worse, this was written for Hollywood and would probably star Chris Pratt for some god awful reason.
RC Bray is always good, might could have used a woman narrator, either way given there are two main characters.
The story feels, IDK, it takes the concepts of two movies and a video game (i won’t say which ones so as not to spoil anything) and fits them all together nicely. There’s some predictable plot armor here and there, military-bro banter, and an appropriately sci-fi action setting.
I’d this were a movie it would be sci-fi pew pew shoot em up action, not sci-fi horror; it would be Predator, not Alien.
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, well done overall. Interesting concepts, but it lacked something i can’t put to words. IDK, it’s worth a credit all things considered.

Narrator Change is Fine - Story Could be Tighter
Revisado: 04-26-24
I think the narrator change is just fine, does a good job. But the story feels like it’s got a few too many extraneous parts and goes on about things i’m not sure add much to the story.
