Historia
This landmark book is for those of us who prefer words to equations; this is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge, the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of time and space. Its author, Stephen W. Hawking, is arguably the greatest mind since Einstein. From the vantage point of the wheelchair, where he has spent the last 20 years trapped by Lou Gehrig's disease, Professor Hawking has transformed our view of the universe. A Brief History of Time is Hawking's classic introduction to today's most important scientific ideas.

very well done
Revisado: 09-10-16
While it was odd hearing Hawking's words without his computer generated voice it was clear that his genius is not only in physics but also it was applied here to clearly relate and explain extremely complex ideas to a non-scientist audience. Many physicists and other scientists are brilliant in their field but cannot relate this to non-scientist.

Historia
Told in language we all can understand, A Brief History of Time plunges into the exotic realms of black holes and quarks, of antimatter and “arrows of time,” of the big bang and a bigger God — where the possibilities are wondrous and unexpected. Stephen Hawking brings us closer to the ultimate secrets at the very heart of creation.

Historia
Just as World War II called an earlier generation to greatness, so the climate crisis is calling today's rising youth to action: to create a better future. In Unstoppable, Bill Nye crystallizes and expands the message for which he is best known and beloved. That message is that with a combination of optimism and scientific curiosity, all obstacles become opportunities, and the possibilities of our world become limitless.

Lots of things to ponder
Revisado: 08-08-16
I like a lot of the ideas that Bill presented. One thing I noted though was that he sees the present course of things as an ongoing thing, that there won't be a massive change we cannot foresee. Years ago I read an article written in the 1850's that predicted that in less than century every major city on earth would have to be abandoned due to a major pollution problem. What was going to cause this catastrophe? Horse excrement. of course trains, trolleys, cars and trucks eliminated this problem long before we had to abandon all our cities.
Remember too that CO2 levels were raised greatly due to earlier fixes for air pollution that led to catylitic converters that changed carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. At the time those pushing the requirements thought they were doing something entirely benign.
We need to be aware that the law of unintended consequences is always in play which means that while it is important to fix problems those solutions need to be carefully thought out so we don't just trade one problem for another.
Bill Nye is a zealot and a good one. We need more people like him but we also need to closely examine all proposed solutions so that we don't just trade one set of problems for another.

Historia
When an inexplicable wave of energy slammed into North America, millions died. In the rest of the world, wars erupted, borders vanished, and the powerful lost their grip on power. The Dead Hand is the suspense-filled story of the people who sought to brake the speeding locomotive of the arms race, then rushed to secure the nuclear and biological weapons left behind by the collapse of the Soviet Union—a dangerous legacy that haunts us even today. The Cold War was an epoch of massive overkill.

Historia
The assumption that Jesus existed as a historical person has occasionally been questioned in the course of the last hundred years or so, but any doubts that have been raised have usually been put to rest in favor of imagining a blend of the historical, the mythical, and the theological in the surviving records of Jesus. Historian and philosopher Richard Carrier reexamines the whole question and finds compelling reasons to suspect the more daring assumption is correct.

I particularly enjoyed the use of stats and original source material. I found this much more compelling than mere argument from modern sources with no way to evaluate his arguments.

Historia
The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world...or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth.

I love a good space story
Revisado: 11-08-15
A dystopia earth set against the promise of a utopian life off among the stars. I will be interested in how they resolve the alien problem. I especially like that the aliens are not anthropomorphic or inferior but rather a really different lifeform that are doing the same thing we are, just adapting to a different set of requirements.

Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

Historia
Josef Fritzl was a 73-year-old retired engineer in Austria. He seemed to be living a normal life with his wife, Rosemarie, and their family - though one daughter, Elisabeth, had decades earlier been "lost" to a religious cult. Throughout the years, three of Elisabeth's children mysteriously appeared on the Fritzls' doorstep; Josef and Rosemarie raised them as their own. But only Josef knew the truth about Elisabeth's disappearance.... For 27 years, Josef had imprisoned and molested Elisabeth in his man-made basement dungeon.
