Historia
What happens when artificial intelligence saturates political life and depletes the planet? How is AI shaping our understanding of ourselves and our societies? Drawing on more than a decade of research, award-winning scholar Kate Crawford reveals how AI is a technology of extraction: from the minerals drawn from the earth, to the labor pulled from low-wage information workers, to the data taken from every action and expression. This book reveals how this planetary network is fueling a shift toward undemocratic governance and increased inequity.

Should be compulsory reading for every human being
Revisado: 02-23-25
I have long believed that the current AI is little more than a glorified word processor but had not realised the way that it has been used to monitor what we do, especially at work.
This book will change how you see AI and how it is bring used today and perhaps make us all aware of the challenges and costs that AI brings to our society and the kind of of society we want to live in.

Historia
Ten years after the walk across Central Asia and Afghanistan that he memorialized in The Places in Between, Rory Stewart set out on a new journey, traversing a thousand miles between England and Scotland. Stewart was raised along the border of the two countries, the frontier taking on poignant significance in his understanding of what it means to be both Scottish and English, of his relationship with his father, who's lived on this land his whole life, and of his ties to the rich history and culture of the region.

Loved this book
Revisado: 02-23-25
After listening to Rory Stewart talking about his walk through Afghanistan in “The Places in Between” I was keen to listen to another of his books.
My maternal grandmothers family lived in tithe Borderlands which made me keen to learn more about this areas history, which I did.
And of course I also learned about Rory’s fathers history and both are really about the history of the UK NS the British Empire.
Being a walker I was also keen to hear about the rambles of a fellow walker.
Looking forward to hearing my next “Rory” book

Historia
Two fugitives, a man and a child, drive all night across a stony desert. As dawn breaks, they roll into an abandoned mine site. From the vehicle they survey a forsaken place - middens of twisted iron, rusty wire, piles of sun-baked trash. They're exhausted, traumatised, desperate now. But as a refuge, this is the most promising place they've seen. The child peers at the field of desolation. The man thinks to himself, this could work. Problem is, they're not alone.

Full Tilt is the inspiring true story of Dervla Murphy's 1963 journey from Ireland to India on an Armstrong Cadet bicycle, and the trials, landscapes, and cultures she encountered along the way. The route takes her through the valleys and snowy mountain passes of Europe and India to the scorching deserts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the metal of her bicycle, Rozinante (named after Don Quixote's steed), becomes too hot to touch.

Historia
In this gripping essay, Hugh White explores Australia’s fateful choice to back America to the hilt and oppose China. What led both sides of politics to align with America so absolutely? Is this a case of sleepwalking to war? What tests might a new government face? White assesses America’s credibility and commitment, by examining AUKUS, the Quad, Trump and Biden. He discusses what the Ukraine conflict tells us about the future. And he argues that the US can neither contain China nor win a war over Taiwan. So where does this leave our future security and prosperity in Asia?

Revisado: 11-04-22
Out previous Prime Minister was setting the stage for war wirh few voices of dissent
Australia does not need ro join America in a war with China and certainly doee not need nuclear submarines unless it plans to be an active part of that war
Australia does not have enough crew for submarines it already has because being in a submarine is really not much fun
Hopefully the new government will veer away from war but I am not hopeful

A real alternative to the mechanical mind
Revisado: 11-04-22
I heard Charles interviewed on ABC Australia's Late Nightt Live and downloaded this book
So called "modem agriculture" destroys the soil that it depends on for its existence and Charles shows us that instead agriculture can regenerate the soil
My family have been farming for 147 years and I am.embarassed by what we have done to the land
I was back at the farm recently and was horrified by the set stocking and the harm being done by the chemicals used
I only hope that more farmers will embrace regenerative agriculture before there simply isn't enough soil to feed everyone
The alternative is famine and despair and the loathing of our grandchildren

Historia
After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system - a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. The audiobook analyses the development and principal features of this capitalist realism as a lived ideological framework. Using examples from politics, films, fiction, work, and education, it argues that capitalist realism colours all areas of contemporary experience.

Historia
Through wide-ranging, and often deeply personal conversation, Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Perry explore how what happens to us in early childhood–both good and bad–influences the people we become. They challenge us to shift from focusing on, “What’s wrong with you?” or “Why are you behaving that way?,” to asking, “What happened to you?”

Historia
Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated audiences for more than five decades, beginning with her first television role at the age of 17. From Gidget’s sweet-faced ‘girl next door' to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-winning ferocity and depth of her role in Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within.
