Profound. Beautifully written and narrated. Requires us to rethink our relationship to the world and the ways in which we seek joy. Kimmerer has written a love letter to life and our beautiful, generous Earth, but one that calls us all reconsider our values. This work is a gift.

This is an incredible story from American History that should be required reading in high schools, and for anyone interested in the currents shaping our country today. Brilliantly researched and written.

The narrators, however, are terrible and make the Audible version almost unusable. The first reader sounds like she thinks she’s reading fairy tales to a kindergarten reading circle and her loopy over-dramatization insults the readers’ intelligence and makes the book, which needs no artificial dramatization, hard to follow. The second reader sounds like he thinks he’s supposed to be playing a-gangster-turned-gumshoe in a low-budget 1930s Hollywood. Noir film, which utterly distracts from the power of the actual story. Only the reader in the third section does a reasonable job. My advice: skip the Audible version and buy a hard copy. I’ll be avoiding any audio books performed by these narrators in the future.

This should be required reading in every high school civics course. Excellent and very informative, providing deep insight into the road we have travelled to our current national crisis.

The New York Times reviewer said there was nothing to critique in this book, and it lived up to his review. A fascinating tale of humans at their limits and of the global price of empire. The narrator is delightful to listen to, although the delivery was sometimes slightly more breathless and sensational then was a good match for the carefully crafted, even-handed and factual history the author created. But definitely an outstanding read and listen all around.

The author has neither a feeling for, nor understanding of, the period about which she writes. The story is written through the lens and sensibilities of a young woman who is utterly 21st century. Thus, the novel rings false in every nuance. The performance is appropriate to the content.

One of the smartest, most engaging, stomach churning, heart wrenching, inspiring, uplifting and laugh-out-loud funny books I have read in years. Jennifer Wright is a storyteller of surpassing talent. Her brilliant, witty writing with its 21st century cultural winks made clear the critical connections between these historical events and our very current realities. Her writing is a conversation with the reader, and Gabe’s Zackman’s narration is so spot-on perfect and nuanced that you will rob yourself of a substantial part of the delight of this book, if you don’t allow Zackman to read it to you. This is an absolute clinic in brilliant science, medical and nonfiction writing and the stories are utterly compelling with much to teach us. I could not turn it off!

The Great Lone is a great read and a great story. What riveted me was that the author succeeded in being pitch perfect about so many different things in this complex story: the experience of always being the new kid in school; the dynamics of dysfunctional families; the sadness and helplessness of loving a Vietnam Vet with PTSD, and above all, what life in Alaska was like in the 1970s and ‘80s and how the Great Alone, once in your soul, never leaves you. Brilliantly written and beautifully read.
