Historia
Mr. Midshipman Easy is the 1836 novel by Frederick Marryat, a retired Captain in the 19th century Royal Navy. The novel is set during the Napoleonic Wars, in which Marryat himself served with distinction. It was adapted twice into films in 1916 and in 1935 as Midshipman Easy. Captain Frederick Marryat (July 10, 1792 - August 9, 1848) was an English Royal Navy officer, novelist, and a contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story.

The audio quality of this book is horrible. It sounds like the narrator is inside a steel drum. I own hundreds of audiobooks, and I've never had anything like this book.
I couldn't get past the first ten minutes. Luckily there is another version of this book by another narrator. I'll try that one.

Historia
Sailing in the Caribbean, Captain Alan Lewrie, Royal Navy, is once again pursuing a chimera. A rich French prize ship he'd left at anchor at Dominica has gone missing, along with six of his sailors. What starts as a straightforward search for it, and them, from Hispaniola to Barbados, far down the Antilles, leads Lewrie to a gruesome discovery on the Dry Tortugas and to a vile cabal of the most pitiless and depraved pirates ever to sail under the "Jolly Roger".

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I won't recommend this book to anyone.
Has The Captain's Vengeance turned you off from other books in this genre?
It may. I have read all of the previous books. There are two more out now. If I'm not happy with the next one, I will give up on the series.
What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
John is my favorite narrator. I search his name on audible to look for books I might enjoy. He's the reason I found this series to begin with.
I wish Daniel Silva had continued to use him for his Gabriel Allon series.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
John Lee, but even he couldn't save it.
Any additional comments?
I gave up on the book 9 hours in. The plot is tedious, the characters are tedious, the sex scenes are tedious. Maybe it eventually goes somewhere, but Lambdin phoned this one in, and I'm moving on.
I rarely ask Audible to refund my purchase, but am considering it.

Fast paced and quintessential Andreas
Revisado: 06-30-17
The story had multiple parts playing out simultaneously which Coes pieces together masterfully. The plot line is as spellbinding, if not more so than Iran having a nuke, or blowing up NYC. A new character is introduced that I suspect will appear in future.
I did not enjoy the narrator's performance. Maybe just because I became so used to the previous narrator's ability to differentiate character voices.
Coes blends an even balance of providing only as much backstory as is absolutely necessary to allow a reader who hasn't read the previous books in the series to be up to speed. Unlike Daniel Silvia's recent books where he uses backstory as filler to create a very thin new episode. Keep it up Ben.

This Series is Stalled
Revisado: 05-27-16
Would you try another book from David Donachie and/or Peter Wickham?
Probably not in the John Pearce series.
What could David Donachie have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Donachie needs to bring this story to climax. He spends half the book retelling the previous books in the story, then doesn't go anywhere with the tale. This book, especially, didn't actually accomplish anything substantial to the story.
What about Peter Wickham’s performance did you like?
Wickham is a good actor, and does voices very convincingly.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I'm angry that the book don't go anywhere, and didn't advance the story line.
Any additional comments?
I won't read another book in this series unless it is headlined as the final novel. The author has milked these characters dry.

Historia
In this seminal story of naval life during the Napoleonic wars, Frederick Marryat's young hero embarks upon a life at sea and finds it to be a rough school indeed. Simple's trials and triumphs, with his faithful mentor, Terence O'Brien, at his side, mirror Marryat's personal experiences. Among the exciting events depicted are the hand-to-hand combat of "cutting-out" missions, the devastating hurricane off St. Pierre, and a mutiny aboard the Rattlesnake.

This book held my interest throughout its entirety. It gave me a glimpse into an area of the world that I have not studied much, and the flavor of the narrative allowed me to create rich visual images of the people, places, and eras.

Couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 06-28-07
I became annoyed early in the book with the writer's silly chatty style. Soon thereafter I became annoyed with the narrator's sing-song voice, and lousy fake accents. Much later I became annoyed with some of the thinly disguised political agenda. And finally I just wanted the book to end.
Ultimately I threw in the towel and just quit listening.
