Historia
In the summer of 1975, 17-year-old Eva Dillon's family was living in New Delhi when her father was exposed as a CIA spy. Eva had long believed that her father was a US State Department employee. She had no idea that he was handling the CIA's highest ranking double agent - Dmitri Fedorovich Polyakov, a Soviet general whose code name was TOPHAT. Dillon's father and Polyakov had a close friendship that went back years, to their first meeting in Burma in the mid-1960s.

Thrilling, intriguing, touching, enlightening!

Excellent. Reads like a riveting spy novel, but full of heart and history. Paul Dillon is my mother's uncle... I had no idea he lived such a fascinating and important life until this book.

Can you imagine writing to Father Christmas and actually getting a reply? Every year, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien would write to Father Christmas, and the letters they received told wonderful stories of his adventures at the North Pole. These humorous tales are brought to life by Derek Jacobi as Father Christmas, John Moffatt as Polar Bear, and Christian Rodska as Ilbereth the Elf, complete with specially composed music.

Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

Worth reading!
Revisado: 10-03-21
Not my favorite of her novels, but I appreciate the concept and what she chose to weave together. It's quite didactic, but I learned a lot through it all. I would have liked to hear more about the thread of the story that reflects historical fact. All in all, I was still charmed and moved by this newest book of one of my favorite authors.

Fun!
Revisado: 09-23-21
We listened to this during our car trips and it was fun and intriguing. We had some good conversations about what we would wish for if we found a genie, why that kind of power and greed could be dangerous, and ultimately the happy ending of choosing family and the good of others over selfish gain. We learned some new fun vocabulary words and had fun with the British references and accents. There's a little bit of history and world geography as well as depictions of how women/girls, children, and orphans were thought of in the past. Overall, mostly fanciful fun.

Historia
White Americans have long been comfortable in the assumption that they are the cultural norm. Now that notion is being challenged, as white people wrestle with what it means to be part of a fast-changing, truly multicultural nation. Facing chronic economic insecurity, a popular culture that reflects the nation's diverse cultural reality, and a future in which they will no longer constitute the majority of the population, and with a black president in the White House, whites are growing anxious.

Provocative
Revisado: 09-07-21
Although biting and sarcastic in its tone at times, this short read packs a powerful punch of profound insight and points made by the author. I learned some shocking things that I had never heard or thought about quite that way before. Many things about this read will stick with me for a while. Conservatives might have a hard time grappling with the perspective and rhetoric here, but I would like them to consider it so that we can keep dialoguing and understanding one another. An insightful and provocative read.

While there are many books about writing, none deal firsthand with the intersection of songwriting, storytelling, and vocation, along with nuts-and-bolts exploration of the great mystery of creativity. In Adorning the Dark, Andrew describes six principles for the writing life: serving the work, serving the audience, selectivity, discernment, discipline, and community. Through stories from his own journey, Andrew shows how these principles are not merely helpful for writers and artists but for anyone interested in imitating the way the Creator interacts with his creation.

I loved everything about this audiobook, especially hearing it read by the author. It's also full of delightful surprises of his own music! It is touching and profound and common and spiritual and practical and beautifully written. It will inspire you and remind you of the good things. I cried a lot. Do not skip the acknowledgments -- there is gold there too!

realistic and telling
Revisado: 09-01-21
I liked the normal and realistic aspect of the characters, storytelling, and conversations. It unfolded slowly, but kept your interest as you felt like a friend of the characters and cared about their everyday experiences. A modern-day look at the immigrant's struggle as they love America and have high hopes for it, but end up learning that it's a country with many flaws and much sadness not unlike like their own. It's a story of the fragile "American Dream" and that those who seem to achieve it can be just as broken and hopeless as those who can't achieve it. it's a story of acceptance and home and the rawness of family dynamics in any culture.

just okay
Revisado: 08-30-21
I have mixed feelings about this book. I really wanted to like it more than I did. It's an easy and quick read, so I did not give up on it and finished it. It definitely has some beautiful writing but lacks the depth of description and cultural commentary and even religious insight that would have made it more meaningful. Lest you think it's a practical look at traveling the world with kids, I also did not learn much about that beyond the surface. She ties it all together sweetly and I'm sure the writing of it was meaningful and transformative for her, but it did not reach me in the same way. It did make me want to travel though and right about it along the way!

beautiful
Revisado: 08-19-21
I love the premise and concept of the story. This author is a poet and writes with vivid description, deep beautiful details, and emotive passion. I found the book a bit slow and boring at times because the same thoughts and feelings and conversations happened over and over again. That's my main criticism. I feel like the good book could have been 1/3 shorter and been still as powerful and beautiful a story. There's a little bit of murder, a little bit of religious fundamentalism, some magic from a prophetess/seer, some coming of age and romance, and the story of the harsh realities of life on the prairie in the 1800s. Ultimately it is about forgiveness and reciprocity and sisterly and motherly love all against the backdrop of the deep metaphors of nature.

Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Informative, compelling, encouraging
Revisado: 08-14-21
First, I did not enjoy the tone and interpretive delivery of the narrator of the audiobook. I do think the originally intended tone of the author is confident and humble and that of a great teacher. I learned things I didn't know about the medieval Church, the evidence of patriarchy in the secular world starting with the Gilgamesh epic, the importance of the resurgence of Arianism heresy, and poignant stories about real women's lives and ministries throughout church history. The author's interpretation and treatment of the Pauline texts about subordination of women are fresh and compelling. She weaves her own personal and devastating experiences throughout a very scholarly and intellectually sound argument well. Although I don't agree with all of her Evangelical Protestant presuppositions and beliefs anymore, I do respect her ability and courage to call out the patriarchy and the resulting subjugation of women from the inside of beloved religious community and practice. she has an excellent job of proving that the patriarchy of complementarianism is not of God or christ, but rather is a secular world structure and belief that doesn't belong in Christianity. This is the kind of book that an Evangelical Protestant or Catholic insider should absolutely read and consider.
