These are good pastiches that feel fairly Doylian. The mysteries and their unraveling are not as outre or complex as ACDs. The narrator is excellent at the different voices.

Thanks to MX publishing for a free audio version. At first, I wasn’t sure about this as I generally like pastiches with the “original” Holmes and Watson as characters. However, Irene and Joe grew on me,though she’s irritatingly rude at times )which lends realism) and he’s too passive (he says he’s good at solving puzzles yet does little to help decipher a cryptic message). The writing and plotting are well done, and I do enjoy Jacqueline de Boer’s excellent narration which I’ve heard in other MX books. I’ll try more of the series and look forward to Irene and Joe’s character development.

An engaging gothic story that closely follows the life of a new governess who wants to expand her horizons and does so much more than expected. The gothic elements are fairly understated until the end.

The audio version is well done.

Enjoyable Stories with Normal Holmes & Watson

Watson is neither critical nor dense—yay— Holmes is up to snuff, and the stories are engaging. Though the book starts off by saying that many of the mysteries overlapped, that’s not really presented much.
I was disappointed that the second to last mystery ends with a promise of a supernatural sounding mystery in western England near Coombe Tracy (village from HOUNd) but doesn’t follow up on that. But the last story of Holmes’ clearing Wiggins mother of murder is satisfying.
Narration is well-done.

Unusual setting and mystery

An amusing and well narrated novella set in modern times with an arrogant Holmes, clueless Watson addicted to working mysteries with Sherlock yet often apologizing for him, and a strange case at a ski resort in Germany.
I don’t know why so many pastiches have Watson extra critical of Holmes. I guess it’s hard to catch the essence of the original characters and their friendship unless that’s not what these authors are going for.

Royal watchers may like this. The narration is well done. I learned of Britain’s role in development of television and other tidbits.
The author is somewhat snooty in X-Factor and Downton Abbey wouldn’t have same audience amass other comments. The writing is repetitive making the book longer than necessary; I’m not sure there’s really a book’s worth to say about the QEII and television. If the reader doesn’t know by halfway through that certain stuffed shirts we’re concerned about royalty losing their mystique we’re the coronation to be broadcast in 1953, they were asleep.

Refreshing to have a different take on Sherlock Holmes without altering Holmes and Watson themselves. The narration suits the subject matter and is well done.
